Hutchinson is a community of about 40,000 residents located in south central Kansas approximately 50 miles northwest of Wichita. It is home to the Cosmosphere space museum, Strataca - an underground salt museum, the Kansas State Fair, and the NJCAA Men`s National Basketball Tournament. Hutchinson Public Schools is a diverse school district with approximately 4,600 students. The student body is 75 percent Caucasian, 8.5 percent African American, 15 percent Hispanic with the balance Native American, Asian and other ethnic groups. About 67 percent of the district`s students are on free or reduced-price lunches. There are six elementary schools, one seventh grade attendance center, one eighth grade attendance center and Hutchinson High School.
