About Jefferson West

The Jefferson West School District has approximately 800 students who attend the three facilities in the District. The District covers 68 square miles in three counties, Jefferson, Jackson and Shawnee.

The Elementary School, which includes grades kindergarten through fourth grade, is located in Meriden, Kansas, with an enrollment of approximately 289 students.

The Middle School is located in Meriden, Kansas, with an enrollment of about 248 students in grades five, six, seven, and eight.

Jefferson West High School is located in Meriden, Kansas, with an enrollment of about 259 students in grades nine through twelve.

The district has dedicated itself to maintaining appropriate classes for the students, allowing a more personal educational experience. Generally, there are around 17-23 students per class throughout the district.

In 2012 the patrons of USD 340 approved a 3.6 million dollar bond issue that provided various improvements to the school facilities.  Some of the improvements included: a new locker room facility with uniform storage, showers and a community room used for film review.  Improvements were also made to the visitors locker room along with restroom facilities and concessions area.  New lights were installed in each gym, new  paint, scoreboard, and bleachers were installed to help fans enjoy the games.  The bond also included a one-to-one iPad initiative for all students.

Our Dedication to Excellence

Jefferson West School District strives to maintain the advantages of a small, rural way of life within its schools. Manageable class sizes, dedicated personnel, personalized instruction, and strong school-community relations are maintained.

Jefferson West provides, through Keystone Learning Service Center, a comprehensive and complete program of Special Education. AdvancED and the State of Kansas accredit all three Jefferson West schools.

In cooperation with the Washburn Institute of Technology, the Jefferson West School District provides a comprehensive vocational and technical program for High School students in grades eleven and twelve.

Jefferson West High School also provides college credit hours through Highland Community College for qualifying students.  A variety of Advanced Placement courses offer another avenue for High School students to earn college credit.

Along with many clubs and student organizations, Jefferson West also offers a Fine Arts program including Band, Vocal Music, Art, Drama, Forensics and Debate opportunities for students.
