District Wide Preschool

The Santa Fe Trail School District serves the communities of Carbondale, Overbrook, and Scranton, Kansas and is a predominately rural school community of approximately 1000 students Pre-K through grade 12.

Each of the district’s three communities has an attendance center. K through third grade attends school at Overbrook Attendance Center. Preschool attends Scranton Attendance Center. Carbondale Attendance Center instructs grades 4 - 8. Santa Fe Trail High School, a 3-A school, with approximately 300 students, is located two miles east of the US Highways 75 and 56 intersection. It is approximately five miles from each of the district’s communities.

The staff consists of 72 certified teachers, 5 administrators and approximately 60 support personnel.  Technology is a priority for the district as the overall computer/student ratio is 1:1.  A district mentoring program provides new teachers with additional resources and support to help ensure their success.

The Santa Fe Trail School District is located in north Osage County, just 14 miles south of Topeka, 35 miles southwest of Lawrence, 60 miles southwest of the Johnson County Kansas City area, and 45 miles northeast of Emporia.  The Santa Fe Trail District is a short commute from Osage City, Lyndon, Baldwin City, Ottawa, and other small communities in the area.

USD 434 offers certified and classified employees health insurance options at no cost for the employee.  In addition, Santa Fe Trail employees can participate in the district’s Section 125 voluntary benefits, a salary reduction plan.  Certified and classified employees who work half-time or more may elect to make contributions to a Tax-Sheltered Annuity 403(b) Plan and/or a Deferred Compensation 457 (b) Plan.  Two elementary schools qualify as Title I buildings and therefore may help teachers qualify for student loan deferments. USD 434 honors years of service in previous districts for veteran teachers.
