Building Principal

Reports to: Superintendent 

Evaluated by: Superintendent

Job Summary

The building principals are directly responsible to the superintendent for the organization, administration, and supervision of the instructional program within his school.  As instructional leader in an individual school, he/she shall cooperate with the superintendent, other staff members, and in general develop and continually review a program designed to develop and improve instruction within an individual school.

Performance Responsibilities

Conduct routine classroom observations throughout the school year;

Make recommendations for appointment, promotion, demotion, suspension, or discharge of all school employees to the superintendent;

Each principal shall recommend to the superintendent staff assignments he/she feels necessary to secure the highest efficiency and learning effectiveness;

Each principal shall cause certain studies to occur designed to determine the adequacy of the curriculum and make such recommendations which will promote better education for the students;

Each principal shall perform such duties as the superintendent may require, and in the absence of specific rules and advice of the superintendent, shall assume any authority or perform any duty which any particular situation, unforeseen and suddenly arising, may demand, subject to later consideration of an action by the superintendent and board;

The principals shall be responsible for the general supervision of the instructional programs in their schools;

Keep informed concerning the policies of the board as stated in the policy handbook;

Employ and assign substitute teachers from a list approved by the superintendent;

Keep an accurate account of all money received and expended in connection with all school activities.  A monthly report shall be made to the board and at the close of each school year, each principal shall present all records to the superintendent  for examination and approval by the board.  The actual recording of this information  may be delegated to the secretary.  The board shall purchase bonds for the principal and secretary in this event;

Handle all complaints affecting his/her school, investigate the facts and refer to the superintendent cases which cannot be concluded satisfactorily;

Cause doors to be open for pupils to enter buildings at least 15 minutes before time of opening of each session of school.  Earlier opening of the building during inclement weather is left to the discretion of the principals;

Must have approval of superintendent to dismiss school before the regular hours;

Keep a current inventory of all furniture, equipment, and supplies at their schools and shall file an inventory report with the superintendent after the close of each school year;

Administer a textbook rental program within the policies adopted by the board;

Guard and protect teacher instructional time;

Administer regular tornado, fire, and crisis drills;

Overall responsibility for the supervision of students during the school day, on school trips, and during any activity or function sponsored by the school and attended by students.  

Responsible for the proper classification and promotion of students;

Responsible for contacting the staff in their building when it is necessary to close school, start late, dismiss early, etc., due to hazardous weather conditions or other unforeseen happenings.  The principals will be in their buildings, if possible, to answer phone calls and patron inquiries;

Responsible for proper enrollment of pupils assigned to their respective schools.  Gain approval from superintendent to enroll any student pre-kindergarten through grade twelve from outside the Unified School District #361;

Authority to excuse any pupil on written request of parents if the principal deems it advisable that the pupil leave the school premises before the regularly scheduled dismissal time;

Schedule and communicate building events;

Responsible for keeping the buildings and grounds safe, clean, attractive and well kept. These duties and others generally classified as janitorial shall be delegated to the custodial staff;

Responsible for the supervision of teachers, custodians, lunchroom personnel, and secretaries under their jurisdiction;

Establish rules for providing order in the buildings and on the grounds as may be necessary in consultation with the superintendent, and shall be held responsible for any lack of neatness and cleanliness about the school premises;

See that removal of school furniture or equipment from the building for private use shall not occur, except upon the direct authorization of the superintendent;

Examine all class records and registers, giving such direction that will insure their being kept in a proper manner. All class records shall be filed in their respective offices at the close of each term;

Promote health and safety education;

See that pupils injured in accidents on the school grounds while under the supervision of the school are taken to their family physician for treatment. Parents should be contacted immediately;

Stay informed and comply with the legal and regulatory requirements of the various governmental agencies.

The district pays 50% of any health plan chosen or about 80% of the highest deductible single plan.
