Benefits Special Education Teachers receive additional training and support for the aspects that make their jobs unique. They also receive four half-days out of the classroom each semester to work on IEPs and documentation. Maize is also resource rich in paras, administrators, counselors and support staff which creates a supportive work environment. Our teachers are encouraged to continue to learn and grow. Many of our Special Education Teachers are working on their Masters degree in Special Education while teaching on a waiver. Tuition is reimbursed at $300 per credit hour. We also offer a professional learning series that qualifies for college credits. Essential Functions - Administers a variety of evaluative tools (e.g. developmental testing programs, subject specific assessments, etc.) to assess student competency levels and develop individual learning plans.
- Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and goals to provide feedback to students, teachers, parents, and administration.
- Collaborates with parents, instructional staff, other school personnel (e.g. OT, PT, Social Worker, Vocational Needs Coordinator, etc.) supporting the improvement of student outcomes and achieving student educational plan objectives.
- Coordinates schedules (e.g. teacher, student, paraeducators, related services, etc.) and provides services in a timely manner.
- Counsels students, parents, and legal guardians to communicate regarding expectations, student's achievements, developing methods for improvement, and reinforcing classroom goals.
- Differentiates classroom work (e.g. instructional methods, materials, content, etc.) to provide students with instruction in alignment with individualized learning plans.
- Facilitates student learning for the purpose of achieving success in academics, social skill awareness, and problem solving.
- Implements behavior intervention plan to provide an effective program addressing individual student requirements.
- Maintains documents, files, and records (e.g. assessments, IEPs, point sheets, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and providing reliable information.
- Manages student behavior (e.g. encouragement and corrective systems, supervision and monitoring routines, instructional interventions, etc.) to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. IEPs, general education intervention meetings, pre-assessment teams, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and gathering information required to perform job functions.
- Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, progress reports, lesson plans, etc.) to document student progress, meet mandated requirements, and communicate information to other parties.
- Develops individual education plan goals and other written materials for student IEPs to establish strategies/opportunities for student success.
- Provides outlets and avenues for students experiencing social/ emotional/ behavioral responses (e.g. safe areas, deescalating rooms, etc.) to reduce stress and encourage positive expressions.
- Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, bullying, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to the education code of ethics and school policies as a mandated reporter.
- Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. other teachers, parents, administrators, etc.) to resolve issues, provide information, and direction.
- Supports classroom teachers with the implementation of established curriculum and individual student plans.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Education, Certification Bachelors Degree KSDE Approved Licensure Experience Job related experience within a specialized field is required Physical Demands, Working Environment This position generally requires the following physical demands: occasional lifting and carrying up to seventy-five (75) pounds, some pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 80% walking, and 10% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
