English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher

This is an elementary position for the 2025-2026 school year.  The teachers primary location will be Tecumseh North Elementary School, but he/she will also support other district schools as needed. 

It is preferred that candidates be fluent in both Spanish and English.

General Description of ELL Teacher Responsibilities:

  1. Support newcomers as they develop conversational English before transitioning into classrooms.
  2. Serve as a resource to classroom teachers to help ELL students achieve academically in the classroom.
  3. Communicate language needs and progress of the ELLs with classroom teachers, administrators, and families.
  4. Facilitate small group and individual instruction.
  5. Use language teaching strategies to increase English proficiency for students who speak a language other than English at home.
  6. Advocate for the needs of the ELL students.
  7. Evaluate the language needs of students whose families speak a language other than English at home and recommend appropriate language support.
  8. Administer a language screener to students for whom a language barrier is impeding their academic success.
  9. Administer ELL assessments.
  10. Write ELL accommodation plans for students.
  11. Maintain accurate ELL cumulative files and communicate changes to Student Services.

Shawnee Heights U.S.D. 450 is a Class 5A suburban school district located between the two major population centers of Topeka and Lawrence, Kansas.
