Prairie Heights Elementary School has an opening for an Academic and Behavioral Intervention Specialist for the 2025-2026 school year. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The applicant must currently hold or expect to hold a Kansas teaching license with the appropriate endorsements or school counselor or social worker credentials.

  • Academic Interventions:

    • Conduct assessments to identify students who need academic support.
    • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized intervention plans tailored to student needs.
    • Utilize evidence-based instructional strategies to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes.
    • Provide small group and one-on-one instruction to students requiring additional academic support.
    • Collaborate with classroom teachers to adjust and differentiate instruction based on student progress.

  • Behavioral Interventions:

    • Conduct tier II and tier III behavioral interventions for students exhibiting challenging behaviors.
    • Employ Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) strategies to foster a positive school climate.
    • Develop and implement individualized behavior intervention plans in collaboration with teachers, parents, and support staff.
    • Monitor student progress and adjust interventions to ensure effective behavioral outcomes.
    • Develop and communicate guidelines for the use of the Student Support Room to staff.

Other Functions:

  • Collaboration and Communication:

    • Work closely with teachers, administrators, and specialists to coordinate interventions and share student progress.
    • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians to provide updates and strategies for supporting students at home.
    • Participate in collaborative team meetings and contribute insights on intervention practices.
  • Professional Development:

    • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in academic and behavioral interventions.
    • Share knowledge and effective strategies with colleagues to enhance overall intervention efforts across the school.

  • AnchorEducation:

    • Bachelors degree in Education, Special Education, School Counseling, Social Work, or a related field (Masters degree preferred).

  • Certification:

    • Valid teaching license, school counselor, or social worker credentials are required.
  • Experience & Skills:

    • Experience working with elementary school students, particularly in an intervention setting, is preferred.
    • Strong understanding of tiered intervention models and best practices in academic and behavioral support.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

AnchorResponsibilities:

  • Implement and continuously refine academic and behavioral intervention strategies to meet individual student needs.
  • Monitor and document student progress, adjusting intervention plans as needed.
  • Work proactively with classroom teachers to integrate intervention strategies into daily instruction.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress and intervention plans.
  • Participate in professional development and contribute to team meetings focused on student support initiatives.

AnchorWork Environment:

  • Primarily an elementary school setting with direct interaction in classrooms, support rooms, and collaborative spaces.
  • Regular engagement with students, teachers, parents, and administrative staff in a dynamic, team-based environment.
  • Occasional use of technology and educational tools to track student progress and facilitate communication.

AnchorRequired Testing and Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid teaching license, school counselor, or social worker credentials as applicable.
  • Successful completion of any state-mandated assessments or professional development requirements related to intervention strategies and student support.

Salary Information

Salary is based on the negotiated agreement and determined by educational level and years of experience. Base salary for a beginning teacher with no experience is $44,558 for the 2025-2026 school year.

Unified School District 417 is located in east-central Kansas in the beautiful Flint Hills region. Our district includes portions of Geary, Wabaunsee, Lyon, and Morris Counties, and is only 30 minutes from both Manhattan and Emporia. It is comprised of two elementary schools and Council Grove Junior Senior High School (3A). The district has an average enrollment of 770 students.
