READING  INTERVENTIONIST 

 

Qualifications:

Preferred certification in K-8 elementary or reading specialist and special education

 

Job Goal: The Academic Interventionist will provide leadership, support, and expertise for the implementation of the reading and mathematics curricula and facilitate efforts with teachers and students to ensure that every student can read and perform mathematically at grade level.

 

Responsibilities: Reading interventionists work extensively with students to help

them improve specific reading skills such as letter-naming, initial sounds, phoneme

segmentation, and comprehension strategies. An interventionist addresses the

specific needs of a particular child when regular classroom instruction is not

sufficient. Interventionists work with the teacher to design methods of learning that

are most appropriate for each child. Interventionists are often former or retired

teachers or paraprofessionals who have been trained in conducting these intensive

learning sessions.

  1. Design interventions and write lesson plans detailing methods and materials.
  2. Assist in the evaluation of the ongoing MTSS program and make recommendations for change.
  3. Assist teachers and other administrators and/or supervisors in implementing the MTSS program
  4. Help teachers diagnose reading strengths and weaknesses and match these skills with the appropriate techniques and materials.
  5. Consult with curriculum committees studying such topics as textbook selection, vocabulary development, concept development, supplementary materials and the development of study skills.
  6. Work with the classroom teacher and district personnel to coordinate reading

instruction designed to meet the individual needs of students.

  1. Assist in providing professional development opportunities and communicating pertinent information to school-based staff as needed.
  2. Participate in on-going and job-embedded professional development such as meetings, workshops, training, and seminars for the purpose of determining success of literacy/math content knowledge, pedagogy, and coaching.
  3. Other duties as assigned.
