Job Description

 

Purpose: The Pre-K Instructional Assistant- under the supervision of the Principal and certified/licensed staff- will support learning for all students by working with students in whole groups- small groups- and one-on-one instructional settings. The Instructional Assistant will work with students in Pre-K.                      

Reports to: Building Principal

 

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt- Hourly ($13.00 per hour- 7.5-hour work day)

 

Required Qualifications:     

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate an ability to work well with children
  • Demonstrate an ability to work well with colleagues
  • Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the District Office (after an employment offer is made) 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor`s Degree from an accredited institution
  • 2+ years experience working with school-aged children

Essential Functions:  To perform this job successfully- an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily

  • Assist certified staff with the presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises
  • Assist the certified/licensed professional as assigned by the Principal
  • Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the certified/licensed professional
  • Assist the classroom teacher in all ways possible based on the specific needs of the individual classroom to ensure its smooth operation
  • Assist in the monitoring of student progress
  • Assist students by answering student questions- providing proper examples- emotional support- and gentle guidance to peer expectations
  • Escort or transport students to and from classrooms- offices- cafeteria- or other areas within the building
  • Assist with the management of assessment records and student portfolios
  • Supervise students in the lunchroom- playground- getting on and off the school bus- and other areas as assigned by the Principal
  • Maintain a positive attitude- friendly interactions- and work cooperatively with students and staff
  • Follow all federal- state- Board- and district policies and procedures
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality concerning students- families- and other district personnel
  • Support the physical needs of students based on their chronological age
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the certified/licensed professional and/or Principal
  • Maintain regular and routine attendance at work

  • Model and implement how to properly utilize academic/behavioral curriculum within the district as assigned by the certified/licensed professional
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment for students
  • Regularly collaborate with certified/licensed professionals on student concerns or issues
  • Model and maintain high ethical standards
  • Assist with classroom and material management
  • Attend in-service and professional development as assigned

  • Ability to enter data into a computer- to see and read a computer screen- and printed material with or without vision aids

Terms of Employment: At-will employment. The Board will determine salary and work schedule.

The Fort Leavenworth School District has been a part of the educational system of the State of Kansas since 1901.  Geographically, it is composed entirely of federal property and includes Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery and the U. S. Federal Penitentiary.  The buildings, which belong to the school district, are located on land leased from the federal government.  We are a Kansas Public School System.  We do not have any connection with the Department of Defense Dependent School System.  The district provides instruction for grades K - 9 in addition to half day preschool for 4 year olds meeting current residency requirements.    The post schools operate under the provisions of Kansas State Law, applicable federal laws, and regulations of the U. S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare.

Commitment to quality and success for every student are hallmarks of the school district.  Children in the Fort Leavenworth Schools have benefited greatly from the support of a community that places a premium on quality education for its young people.

District facilities consist of four schools, and one central administration building.  The district also has a warehouse and transportation center.  All schools in the district have been extensively renovated and all life safety features upgraded.  All schools have at least the following:  auditorium, gymnasium, full service kitchen, cafeteria, technology classrooms, two computer labs, separate art and music rooms and a full service library media center.  All schools are maintained in excellent condition.
