Title:  Special Education Nurse (2025/26 School Year) 

 

Purpose and Objectives of the Position

The Special Education Nurse provides daily- constant observation and assistance with students` feeding tubes and trachs as an essential part of the students` Individualized Education Plans.

 

Reports to:  Building Principal & Assistant Superintendent of Student Services

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

 

Salary: Hourly- Column G of the Classified Employee Salary Matrix- with step determined based on years of relevant experience in a school setting (Range $22.00-$38.98 per hour)

 

Qualifications:

  • Current Kansas Nurses License (LPN or RN)
  • Public school experience preferred
  • Possession of the knowledge- skills- abilities- and physical attributes necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate or acceptable.
  • Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office (after an employment offer is made). 

Essential Functions:

  • To help identify and monitor children with health problems
  • To monitor and care for children with medical needs as expressed in an Individualized Education Plan
  • To review students’ health records with district and building personnel as needed
  • Interpret any significant findings
  • Assist in identifying and accommodating students with specific health issues or disabilities
  • Notify parents of sick or injured students- informing them of the action taken and seeking further instructions from them
  • Ability to implement and follow all school district policies during all activities
  • Ability to keep current on new information- innovative ideas- and techniques
  • Ability to keep student information and records confidential
  • Ability to respond to information requests in a cooperative- courteous- and timely manner
  • Ability to implement and follow all district health and safety policies- including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan
  • Ability to perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff

  • Sit and stand for extended periods
  • Bend- stoop- sit on the floor- climb stairs- walk- and reach overhead
  • Ability to see and read a computer screen and/or printed materials

  • Speak in an audible tone so that others may clearly understand in regular classrooms- outdoors- and on the telephone
  • Physically able to independently lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height

The Fort Leavenworth School District has been a part of the educational system of the State of Kansas since 1901.  Geographically, it is composed entirely of federal property and includes Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery and the U. S. Federal Penitentiary.  The buildings, which belong to the school district, are located on land leased from the federal government.  We are a Kansas Public School System.  We do not have any connection with the Department of Defense Dependent School System.  The district provides instruction for grades K - 9 in addition to half day preschool for 4 year olds meeting current residency requirements.    The post schools operate under the provisions of Kansas State Law, applicable federal laws, and regulations of the U. S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare.

District facilities consist of four schools, and one central administration building.  The district also has a warehouse and transportation center.  All schools in the district have been extensively renovated and all life safety features upgraded.  All schools have at least the following:  auditorium, gymnasium, full service kitchen, cafeteria, technology classrooms, two computer labs, separate art and music rooms and a full service library media center.  All schools are maintained in excellent condition.
