Job Description

 

Purpose: To provide temporary support and assistance to students and educators. The substitute paraprofessional will work under the direction of classroom teachers or school administrators to ensure continuity in instruction- promote a safe and inclusive learning environment- and support students` individual needs. This position has the potential to sub in more than one building in a day- depending on the needs.

 

Reports To:    Director of Special Education & Building Principal

 

FLSA Status:  Non-exempt

 

Salary:  Daily Rate $150.00 per day 

 

Required Qualifications:   

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the District Office (after an employment offer is made)
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

 

Essential Functions: 

 

  • Assist students with daily classroom activities- including instructional tasks- group work- and independent assignments
  • Provide individualized support to students with special needs- following the guidance of the teacher-  Individualized Education Program (IEP)- or BCBA
  • Support students in developing social- emotional- and academic skills
  • Supervise students to ensure a safe- orderly- and inclusive environment
  • Reinforce classroom rules and routines as outlined by the teacher- school policies- IEP- or behavior plan
  • Assist in managing student behavior- using positive reinforcement and de-escalation strategies
  • Implement lesson plans and activities as directed by the classroom teacher
  • Collect behavioral data as directed by the BCBA or teacher
  • Implement behavior intervention plans as directed by the BCBA or teacher
  • Assist in preparing and organizing classroom materials and resources
  • Support small group or one-on-one instruction to meet diverse learning needs
  • Help students with mobility- feeding- hygiene- or medical needs as required- adhering to established protocols and training
  • Facilitate accommodations or modifications outlined in students` IEPs or behavior plans
  • Communicate observations or concerns about student behavior or progress to the teacher or administrator
  • Quickly familiarize with classroom routines- procedures- and expectations
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and information

  • Sit and stand for extended periods.

  • Hear- speak- and understand English at normal classroom levels both indoors- outdoors- on the telephone- and on other technology devices
  • Physically able to independently lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height

The Fort Leavenworth School District has been a part of the educational system of the State of Kansas since 1901.  Geographically, it is composed entirely of federal property and includes Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery and the U. S. Federal Penitentiary.  The buildings, which belong to the school district, are located on land leased from the federal government.  We are a Kansas Public School System.  We do not have any connection with the Department of Defense Dependent School System.  The district provides instruction for grades K - 9 in addition to half day preschool for 4 year olds meeting current residency requirements.    The post schools operate under the provisions of Kansas State Law, applicable federal laws, and regulations of the U. S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare.

District facilities consist of four schools, and one central administration building.  The district also has a warehouse and transportation center.  All schools in the district have been extensively renovated and all life safety features upgraded.  All schools have at least the following:  auditorium, gymnasium, full service kitchen, cafeteria, technology classrooms, two computer labs, separate art and music rooms and a full service library media center.  All schools are maintained in excellent condition.
