Purpose:                      The Middle School Principal provides professional leadership in organizing, administering, supervising, and evaluating an effective school program.  To accomplish these tasks, the Middle School Principal works closely with the community, staff, and administration of USD 253.
                       
Responsible to:            Superintendent of Schools
 
Payment rate:              As Established by the Emporia Board of Education
 
General conditions:     12 months, running July 1 to June 30
                                               
Qualifications:
 

  1. Masters degree from an accredited college/university.
  2. Current Kansas State Licensure with endorsement appropriate to the assignment on file in the Central Office.
  3. Three years of successful experience in an accredited school.
  4. Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office.

 
Essential Functions:    Provide professional leadership in organizing, administering, and evaluating the instructional program to assure:
 

  1. Managing Change

a.   Is willing to and actively challenges the status quo.
b.   Adapts his or her leadership behavior of the needs of the current situation and   is comfortable with dissent.
c.   Communicates and operates from strong ideals about school and schooling.
d.   Ensures that the faculty and staff are aware of the most current theories and practices and makes the discussion of these a regular aspect of the school culture.
e.   Is knowledgeable about the current curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices.
f.    Monitors the effectiveness of school practices and their impact on student learning.
g.   Inspires and leads new challenging innovations.
 
2.    Focus of Leadership
a.   Recognizes and rewards individual accomplishments.
b.   Protects teachers from issues and influences that would detract from their time or focus.
c.   Establishes clear goals and keeps those goals in the forefront of the schools attention.
d.   Is directly involved in helping teachers design curricular activities and address assessment and instructional issues.
e.   Establishes a set of standard operating procedures and routines.
f.    Is an advocate and spokesperson of the school to all stakeholders.
g.   Provides teachers with material and professional development necessary for the execution of their jobs.

a.         Recognizes and celebrates school accomplishment and acknowledges failures.
b.   Establishes strong lines of communication with teachers and among students.
c.   Fosters shared beliefs and sense of community and cooperation.
d.   Involves teachers in the design and implementation of important decisions.
e.         Demonstrates awareness of the personal aspects of teachers and staff.
f.    Is aware of the details and undercurrents in the running of the school and uses this information to address current and potential problems.
g.   Has quality contacts and interactions with teachers and students.
                       
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

  1. Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  2. Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
  3. Occasionally requires stooping, bending, and reaching.
  4. Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.
  5. Must work in noisy and crowded environments.

 
General Responsibilities:
1.   Support and facilitate the mission, vision, and core principles of the Emporia Public Schools.
2.   Communicate effectively with administrators, parents, staff, and community organizations.
3.   Provide a focus of leadership that establishes clear goals and inspires others to do difficult work and solve adaptive challenges.
4.   Serve as a change agent by consistently challenging the status quo and helping others manage their own personal change.
5.   Build strong productive relationships with all stakeholders and create a purposeful community of learners.  
6.   Communicate the positive aspects of the school and its programs to the public in word and deed.
7.   Participate in the ongoing development/revision, implementation, and monitoring/assessment of curriculum as outlined by the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning.
8.   Obtain instructional resources and materials through processes outlined by the Assistant Superintendent of Business/Finance.
9.   Select quality staff and assign licensed and classified personnel through processes outlined by the Associate Superintendent of Human Resources.
10. Effectively utilize the expertise of other district professionals and/or outside consultants to support instruction/student achievement.
11. Report to the Superintendent and/or Directors regarding the needs of the school with respect to personnel, finance, curriculum, facilities, equipment, and supplies.
12. Supervise/provide for the general welfare of students at school and at school activities; organize/supervise field trips; etc.
13. Provide for effective programs and processes to support student conduct, attendance and academic progress.
14. Develop and maintain documentation relative to program requirements.
15. Organize the school day/year to provide for efficient operation of the school.  Appropriately delegate duties for effective utilization of staff while assuming final responsibility for the overall school program.
16. Stay abreast of new technologies to facilitate and support student learning, data management, and communication.  Encourage the professional growth of teachers by advanced training, experimentation, and evaluation.
17. Comply with legal and regulatory requirements as provided by state and federal law.
18. Uphold and enforce board policy, administrative procedures, and school rules/regulations including but not limited to:

  • Acceptable use of technology
  • Harassment and bullying
  • Child abuse reporting
  • Health and safety including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan

19. Interact with students, parents, and staff in a professional manner demonstrating respect for individual differences, patience, and sensitivity.
20. Demonstrate professionalism through appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance; accurate record keeping and timely submission of required reports; participate in building/district level committee tasks; contribute to SIT/IEP activities, etc.
21. Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics, and state and federal laws.
22. Support the profession by mentoring aspiring teachers, administrators, and other support personnel.
23. Maintain safe and well-organized instructional spaces.
24. Be prepared to implement the Building/District Emergency Operations Plan; actively participate in response drills.
25. Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

Salary Information

Base salary of $109,698 with additional compensation for experience and level of education.
