JOB TITLE:Principal
QUALIFICATIONS:

1. A valid building-level license issued by the Kansas State Board of Education.

2. Ability to work cooperatively and constructively with others, including the ability to communicate effectively with broad and diverse audiences.

3. Ability to handle a fast-paced, intense work environment.

4. Ability to manage job responsibilities and meet the established building outcomes. 

5. Ability/willingness to work a daily schedule that could demand an extended workday.

REPORTS TO:Superintendent
JOB GOAL:To use leadership, supervisory and administrative skills to promote the educational development of the individual student and, through that development, student achievement that ensures school accreditation.  The degree of freedom to act is significant, as many decisions will be made using administrative discretion with district policy serving only as a guide, not a blueprint for action.

 PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITES: 

1. Supports the total athletic/activity/academic program of the Peabody-Burns school system.

2.  Demonstrates professionalism:

     a. Regular and consistent attendance to complete all job duties

     b. Models professional attitude and image with all stakeholders

      c. Is reliable, dependable, punctual, accurate and timely in all job duties

      d.  Understands and supports the vision of the School District

       e. Supports assigned administrator(s) and department staff for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

3.  The principal oversees safe and orderly schools.

     a.  Implements effective procedures for ensuring a safe and orderly learning environment.

      b.  Takes appropriate action when students exhibit emotionally/physically distressed behaviors.

      c. Complies with, or monitors compliance with, all state and federal laws.

     d. Implements board policies, rules and regulations.

4. The principal ensures student achievement for all student groups.

    a. Collects and reports data on academic achievement by all student groups.

    b. Monitors assessment of all students in basic skills areas.

    c. Evaluates effectiveness of teaching materials, activities and approaches, and provides assistance when necessary.

5.  The principal builds positive school/community relations.

      a. Supports the school and district mission.

      b. Promotes positive relationships between all persons in the school community.

     c. Facilitates effective site councils.

6.  The principal leads the school in developing constructive student/adult relations.     

      a. Helps students develop responsibility for their conduct.

      b. Cultivates staff behaviors that promote respect of authority, tolerance of diversity, and appreciation of each students potential.

7.  The principal oversees effective and efficient staff performance.

      a.  Works with staff to develop and recommend standards for student learning.

      b. Plans in-service activities based on student and staff needs and ensures they are effectively implemented.

      c. Recruits, supervises and evaluates instructional staff in accordance with policy and law.

     d. Interacts effectively with building/district personnel.

8. The principal practices responsible fiscal, facility, and resource management.

   a. Organizes effective budget planning procedures.

   b.  Ensures building expenditures do not exceed the limits set forth by the board-approved budget.

   c. Maintains building records and property.

9. The principal models positive professional attributes.

   a. Engages professional growth activities as directed.

   b. Uses written and spoken language well.

   c. Makes all necessary administrative decisions in a timely fashion.

d. Delegates supervision when appropriate.

e. Maintains office hours as determined by the superintendent.

10.  Other duties as assigned by the administration which may be relevant to this assignment.  

Terms of Employment15 days before and 15 days after school calendar year.
Evaluation:Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with applicable provisions of the USD #398 Board of Educations Evaluation policy.

Benefits Information

District paid single BC/BS Health Insurance, $50 cellphone stipend, 2 personal days per year and 15 sick days per year which accumulate to 75 days.

Peabody-Burns USD 398 serves approximately 200 PreK-12 students in southern Marion county including the city of Peabody and the city of Burns.  Peabody-Burns Elementary School is a PreK-5 facility located at 506 Elm in Peabody and Peabody-Burns Jr/Sr High School is a 6-12 facility located at 810 North Sycamore in Peabody, Kansas.  USD 398 is committed to educational excellence and strives to meet the needs of its students.  Peabody is located 15 miles northeast of Newton, Kansas on highway 50.  We are approximately 50 miles from Emporia and 35 miles from Wichita.
