Title: Special Education - Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) STAR Teacher

Reports To: Building Principal and Director of Special Services

Work Year: 186 Days/Year 

Salary: Salary Schedule based on years experience and professional development plus a 7% from the based stipend for special education.

 

Job Summary: The Star Program is a district wide program serving students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)The STAR Program teacher will implement an intensive structured teaching model. The STAR teacher is responsible for planning instruction and adaption of the general/special education curriculum to accommodate students in the learning process. The STAR teacher will function as the primary implementer for students with individualized education programs (IEPs) and oversees their compliance. It is the expectation that each duty will be performed effectively throughout the school year.  This program has two classrooms and two special education teachers with several paras assigned to each teacher.

 

Our special services department provides monthly collaboration meetings- para collaboration meetings- an instructional coach and behavior specialist support for our special education teachers.

 

Job Functions:

  • Comply with timelines- laws- and regulations as it relates to district- state- and federal policies and procedures.
  • Develop timely and compliant IEPs for eligible students
  • Plan and implement academic instruction for students who exhibit communication- social

and behavioral challenges using evidence based methods (ie Direct Instruction) and

modified curriculum materials (ie VB-MAPP) as well as general education

curriculum

  • Plan and implement non-academic instruction in areas such as social skills and toilet training
  • Monitor and document provision of educational services for students on caseload of approximately 6-8 students
  • Collaborate with all service providers- general education teachers and other staff to

support and provide documentation for the review of existing data.

  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of individual student’s progress 
  • Provide support to general education classroom teachers- as appropriate
  • Develop implement and evaluate the effectiveness of behavior support plans including a

classroom plan and any needed individual plans as well as carry out these plans with

fidelity until they are modified by the team

  • Use CPI training and an understanding of the function of behavior to prevent behavior

and intervene safely and effectively- including restraint when part of a written plan

  • Maintain consistent contact with parents
  • Provide support to staff in all areas related to emotional disturbance and behavioral disorders and interventions 
  • Participate in special education meetings as directed by the special education supervisor

and collaborate with all staff involved with the students 

  • Maintain a log to document students’ goals and objectives- accommodations-

and other IEP related services

  • Fulfill district and state professional development requirements
  • Supervise and evaluate the team of paraprofessionals as well as provide professional development to that team.
  • Facilitate team processes including problem solving- and IEP development for students with special needs.
