Director of TransportationMadison-Virgil USD 386 • www.usd386.net USD 386 Director of Transportation USD-386 Madison-Virgil is seeking a dedicated and highly qualified Transportation Director to lead and manage our district transportation program. The Transportation Director ensures the safe and efficient transportation of students while also serving as a route driver. This role is responsible for supervising, training, and supporting transportation staff, managing critical vendor relationships, overseeing the implementation or change of transportation-related policy, maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations, and fostering a culture of safety, professionalism, and reliability. The Transportation Director reports directly to the Superintendent and is expected to contribute to the mission and goals of USD-386 as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Minimum of 3 years of bus driving experience. Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements. Demonstrated experience in training and mentoring bus drivers. Clear and safe driving record. History of stable, reliable employment. High school diploma or GED (college or technical training preferred). Ability to pass all required background checks, physical exams, and drug/alcohol screenings. Knowledge of the Kansas Department of Education (KSDE) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) transportation regulations. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Preferred Qualifications Prior supervisory or management experience in school transportation. Experience in route planning, fleet maintenance coordination, and scheduling. Familiarity with student behavior management on buses. Key Responsibilities Oversee and manage daily operations of the districts transportation program. Drive a regular school bus route and activity routes as needed. Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate bus drivers and transportation staff. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and district transportation policies and safety regulations. Schedule and coordinate routes, activity trips, and special transportation needs. Conduct regular safety meetings, driver training sessions, and emergency drills. Maintain accurate records of routes, mileage, fuel usage, and driver certifications. Monitor and coordinate vehicle inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs. Serve as the primary point of contact for transportation-related concerns from parents, staff, and the community. Investigate and document incidents, accidents, and complaints. Collaborate with district leadership to align transportation services with USD-386s mission and goals.
