Parents as Teachers

The Parent Educator provides parent education via regular personal visits implementing the Parents as Teachers curriculum. The Parent Educator will assess family needs and provide developmentally appropriate information, guidance, and support to parents.  

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Complete and maintain current Parents as Teachers certification as a parent educator, and required professional development hours for years of service. 

Demonstrate an appropriate level of knowledge about what promotes optimal parentchild interaction and infant, toddler, and child development. 

Demonstrate knowledge of or willingness to obtain training in data collection program, virtual meeting software, and other digital tools frequently used by the program. 

Engage in ongoing learning about issues related to cultural sensitivity and competency. Adapt the National Parents as Teachers curriculum and creatively incorporate resources to meet family needs including ethnic and cultural differences.

Serve the number of families determined by program guidelines including successful completion of face-to-face visits and group meetings.

Complete all required documentation regarding home visits, screening summaries, and all essential records required by the program, in a timely and comprehensive manner. 

Support families in seeking appropriate resources when needed based on the results of screenings. This includes developing knowledge and collaboration of community resources and other county agencies to assist parents with appropriate referrals and services.

Plan and conduct parenting group meetings, story times, and learning groups/activities.

Participate in regular supervision with the program coordinator and engage in setting personal goals for self-development.

Perform any other duties deemed appropriate by the coordinator.
