Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist 

Job Summary: 

  • The TVI/COMS Teacher will teach specific skills that students need to learn because of their visual impairment, adapted wtas of doing everyday activities, and methods of participating in school curriculum, such as Braille, using low vision devices, and independent living skills.
  • Conducting various assessments (such as FVA, LMA, and O&M) to detemine abilities and needs.
  • Working with family members to make it easier for the visually impaired child to participate in family life. 
  • Making referrals for additional serviced the VI student may need. 
  • Preparing or obtaining learning materials in an appropriate and accessible format. 
  • Consultation and training with other school personnel on effective strategies for teaching the VI student. 

General Purpose: 
Responsible for planning, developing, delivering and evaluating appropriate individualized educational services, learning programs and instruction for special needs students in both self-contained and integrated settings in consultation with other school personnel.

Supervisory Responsibilities: 
Directs, monitors, mentors, and evaluates paraeducators working with students who have disabilities.  

Supervisor:
SCKSEC Director/ Assigned SCKSEC Assistant Director/ Assigned Building Principal

 

Education and Experience:

Bachelors degree in Special Education required; Masters degree preferred. 

Appropriate state license required.

  • Two years of experience highly preferred.  


Physical Requirements: 

Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout school and classroom.

Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at a time. 

Must be able to assist students who have physical difficulties.

Must be able to kneel, sit, stand, crawl, push, and pull to assist and teach children throughout the day.

Prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer to complete necessary paperwork.

Terms of Employment:
Under the terms of the Negotiated Agreement. Generally, one-year and renewable. 

Performance Review:

Performance effectiveness evaluated in accordance with Kansas Statutes, Board of Education Policy and terms, if applicable, the Negotiated Agreement.

In addition to the services provided in member district buildings, SCKSEC provides services at one alternative attendance center in Pratt and Life Skills Centers in Medicine Lodge and Kingman.
