Teacher - Biology (Grades 9-12)

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the purpose of the position is to develop students` skills and competence in the area of Biology.

Qualifications Profile

         KSDE Certification/License (District will work with the applicant to achieve the appropriate/necessary license)

  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

         TB Skin Test/Physical completed and on file

         Ability to pass a background check

         Valid drivers license or state issued ID

Essential Job Functions

         Develops and administers Biology curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.

         Create a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.

         Designs lesson plans and instructional materials that promote sequential learning, critical thinking, and effective use of instructional time.

         Teaches Biology, including Anatomy and Physiology, encouraging creative thinking, analysis, and scientific inquiry.

         Develops learning experiences that demonstrate the application of science to everyday life and problem-solving.

         Conducts ongoing assessments of student progress; adjusts instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs, including students with special needs.

         Maintains familiarity with district and Kansas State standardized assessments and adapts curriculum to maximize student achievement.

         Engages in professional development activities, including workshops, seminars, research, and professional meetings.

         Maintains accurate and complete records of student performance, attendance, and required documentation in compliance with district procedures and applicable laws.

         Encourages parental involvement and maintains effective communication with students and families.

         Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior consistent with district policies to support a positive learning environment.

         Collaborate with colleagues, participate in faculty meetings and committees, and contributes to school-wide initiatives.

         Selects and requisitions appropriate instructional materials and laboratory supplies; maintains inventory records

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current instructional strategies, including differentiated instruction, and educational pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of biology, anatomy and physiology, and related scientific disciplines.
  • Knowledge of data systems, student performance analysis, and instructional planning.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency with computer systems, educational software, and learning management systems.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Commitment to continuous professional growth and self-evaluation.

Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

         Work is performed in a standard science classroom and school building environments.

         Exposure to laboratory materials and equipment including potentially flammable materials commonly found in science classrooms.

         Requires the ability to maintain emotional control while under stress and in stressful situations.

         Requires the ability to frequently stand for prolonged periods of time.

         Requires the ability to walk frequently.

         Requires the ability to use standard office equipment including computer and peripherals and other instructional equipment for prolonged periods of time.

         Requires the ability to frequently use repetitive hand motions, including frequent keyboarding and mouse use.

         Requires the ability to frequently kneel/squat, bend/stoop, push/pull, twist, or reach.

         Requires the ability to frequently lift and carry items 25 lbs.

         Requires the ability to work and concentrate in noisy and/or crowded environments.

         Requires the ability to work with frequent interruptions.

         Requires the ability to occasionally work outside with exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures.

         Requires timeliness and regular attendance and physical presence at the job.

Equipment

         Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

         Lab equipment for Biology classroom

Travel Requirements

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Benefits Information

District pays the employer rates for a dependent or single plan in the Kansas State Employee Health Plan. There are five (5) different medical plans to choose from and two different providers. Medical, dental and vision plans are all available. District also pays for a $25,000 life insurance policy as part of the benefit package. Ten (10) sick leave days and three (3) personal days are available each year. Professional Development opportunities are numerous and available for both growth and movement on the salary schedule.

Salary Information

Placement on the USD 445 negotiated salary schedule based on experience and education level. Starting pay for new teacher on the salary schedule is currently $46,900. Experience, college credits and professional development points (from USD 445) are utilized in column movement on the salary schedule. Contracted days total 180. This does not include any possible supplemental pay that might be considered. If you are interested in supplemental positions, the salary would be in addition to what is your base salary amount.

SCHOOLS

Coffeyville Unified School District #445 has a diverse student population comprised of six attendance centers:

  • Field Kindley High School is a 9-12 center with approximately 500 students.
  • Roosevelt Middle School is a 7-8 center with approximately 250 students.
  • Community Elementary is a K-6 center with about 900 students.
  • Dr. Jerry Hamm Early Childhood Learning Center is our birth to four- year old center.

INSTRUCTION

USD 445 employs six instructional coaches district wide to assist teachers in everything from Literacy First strategies, technology integration, and in the latest in teaching and learning strategies.

TECHNOLOGY

Coffeyville USD 445 operates a large technology budget and incorporates the latest technology in the classroom, including eno boards, projectors in every room, IP phone system, and four computer labs. All teachers are issued  a laptop for use in their classrooms. Laptops are 1:1 for all middle school and high school students.
