Job Title Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Reports To Superintendent of Schools Summary The Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning serves as a key member of the districts Executive Leadership Team and is responsible for providing visionary leadership and direction for all academic services. The Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning drives excellence in academics and research by establishing a clear, bold vision for high-quality, equitable education, and articulating that vision to staff, families, community partners, and the Board of Education. The Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning is responsible for ensuring instructional practices and academic programs meet the diverse needs of all students and are aligned to the districts goals and priorities. In addition to overseeing curriculum and instruction, the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning collaborates with local universities and external partners to expand opportunities for students and staff, enhance research-based practices, and support leadership development pipelines. Curriculum and Instructional Program Oversight - Oversee the development and delivery of curriculum and instructional programs that incorporate district goals and support student achievement.
- Monitor and reevaluate instructional programs on an ongoing basis using input from teachers and principals, applied research, and student data to determine effectiveness and improve outcomes. Recommend changes and adjustments where appropriate.
- Assume primary responsibility for developing curriculum articulated and coordinated to effectively guide a sequential and aligned K-12 instructional program for instructional staff.
- Facilitate the implementation and development of curriculum.
- Coordinate the development of procedures related to curriculum and instruction.
- Facilitate effective school district curricular decisions.
Supervision and Leadership - Supervise, coordinate, and evaluate the personnel in the department.
- Work cooperatively with district staff to define district needs and serve as a support to the instructional program.
- Actively support the efforts of others to achieve district goals and objectives and performance objectives.
- Encourage and model innovative thinking and risk taking and view problems as learning opportunities.
- Promote learning and high expectations for students and staff performance.
- Anticipate, manage, and resolve conflicts.
Data-Driven Decision Making - Work collaboratively regarding the collection, review, interpretation, and use of data to improve student achievement.
- Obtain and use evaluative findings to examine curriculum/instructional program effectiveness.
- Supervise the use of formative assessment practices.
District-Level Collaboration and Compliance - Participate in the district-level decision process to establish and review the districts goals and objectives and major classroom instructional programs of the district.
- Remain well-informed and up to date about trends and developments in research and evaluation theory and practice.
- Remain up to date on state mandates and priorities as they relate to assigned responsibilities.
- Provide a final recommendation regarding the textbook adoption process and recommendations regarding instructional programs and materials related to the textbook adoption process.
Communication and Professional Skills - Use a variety of communication tools and techniques to exchange information and ideas effectively.
- Demonstrate clear and effective writing, speaking, and active listening skills.
Budget and Resource Management - Participate in effective budget planning and management.
Other Duties - Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience Education - Masters degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related field required.
- Doctorate degree in Education or related field preferred.
Certification - Valid administrative certification/license as required by the state.
Experience - Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in curriculum development, and instructional leadership.
- Minimum of three (3) years of building principal experience.
- Proven experience in leading curriculum and instruction initiatives at the district level.
- Demonstrated success in implementing teacher and principal leadership development programs.
- Experience in facilitating data-driven decision-making processes to support continuous school improvement.
- Proven ability to manage complex projects, budgets, and multiple priorities effectively.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Extensive knowledge of current educational research, curriculum standards, instructional practices, and assessment strategies.
- Strong leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills with the ability to develop leadership capacity at all levels.
- Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively engage diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to manage conflict, build consensus, and foster collaboration across teams.
- Skilled in strategic planning, organizational change management, and innovation in educational settings.
