The counselor/student support specialist will serve as a student advocate so that students attain a level of personal and social adjustment that facilitates the achievement of their academic goals.  They work closely with school staff and administration, families, and community agencies to provide a successful educational experience for each student.  

  1. Provide individual counseling and group guidance to help students cope effectively with personal, social, academic, career, and family concerns.
  2. Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students.
  3.  Implement a comprehensive college career readiness student appraisal process.
  4. Update and maintain confidential student records, including cumulative transcripts and student files.
  5. Implement an effective program of educational and career planning.
  6. Coordinate opportunities for students to visit with resource persons and recruiters about academic and career choices.
  7. Provide information regarding financial aid and scholarships for college and vocational training as needed
  8. Assist with enrollment to ensure that students complete courses appropriate to their needs and which lead to college and career readiness.
  9. Assist in a continuous program of student orientation.
  10. Assist in making recommendations for school curriculum and instructional practices.
  11. Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques.
  12. Serve as a student advocate.
  13. Assist in the determination of an appropriate action plan for improving student learning.
  14. Assist in determining obstacles to student learning by providing insight into the social, emotional, physical, and educational status of students and families.
  15. Facilitate the elimination of obstacles to student learning.
  16. Demonstrate knowledge and skills regarding the social, emotional, physical, and educational needs of students and families.
  17. Assist in establishing a positive learning environment.
  18. Respond to the social and emotional needs of students.
  19. Ensure that all activities conform to local, state, and federal guidelines, rules, and regulations.
  20. Respond to change productively and perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits Information

The district will pay $525 per month, prorated for part-time teachers, toward a single or family policy on the district group health insurance plan. The district reimburses up to $900 per school year for any college credit hours taken after employment begins. The district provides annually a single membership for Attica Wellness Center memberships. Candidates can participate in the district 125 plan, tax-sheltered annuity plans, and medical reimbursement card program. Currently, Attica Public Schools serve 180 students in grades PreK-12.  Attica students have great attitudes toward learning and growing as a school community. The Attica Board of Education and Staff cares deeply for the students and works hard to give the students as many educational opportunities as possible.  Part of these opportunities come through experiencing education through hands-on learning of Project Based Learning, field trips, and Career and Technical Education Pathway experiences.  These experiences come to a conclusion in our high school through the Transition to Career program.  The T2C program allows our students to gain real-world experiences through internships, job shadowing, and even work placement.  This is a successful, cooperative program with the Chaparral School District, Medicine Lodge School District, and all Harper County manufacturing companies.
