Syracuse High School, USD 494, is seeking a dynamic and dedicated English Language Arts (ELA) teacher for 11th and 12th grades to join our team. We are a small, close-knit high school with a strong culture of success and continuous improvement, committed to fostering academic excellence and preparing students for post-secondary success. Additionally, USD 494 operates on a four-day school week, with Fridays off.

With an enrollment of 144 students and average class sizes of 15 to 20, you will have the opportunity to form meaningful connections with students and provide personalized attention. The district has well-established and supported tiered reading interventions and dedicated instructional teams that strive to make data-based decisions to ensure all students receive the support they need to succeed.

As an ELA teacher at Syracuse High School, you will be responsible for implementing the district curriculum to provide high-quality instruction to students in 11th and 12th grades. You will play an integral role in enhancing students' reading, writing, and analytical skills, preparing them for college, careers, and life. The ideal candidate will be passionate about education, have a deep knowledge of English Language Arts content, and be committed to the success of every student.

In addition to teaching, there are a variety of coaching and sponsorship opportunities available. Whether its leading a sports team, advising student clubs, or helping to organize school events, you will have the chance to make a lasting impact on students beyond the classroom. These opportunities provide a chance to engage with students in meaningful ways and foster a sense of community within the school.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teach engaging, standards-aligned lessons in English Language Arts for 11th and 12th grade students, including reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills.
  2. Develop and implement instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs of all learners, including differentiated instruction and personalized learning.
  3. Utilize tiered reading interventions to support struggling readers and ensure all students have access to grade-level content.
  4. Create a positive and respectful classroom environment that promotes student growth, responsibility, and a love of learning.
  5. Collaborate with colleagues to enhance curriculum development and instructional practices.
  6. Assess student progress regularly, provide constructive feedback, and maintain accurate records of student performance.
  7. Foster strong relationships with students, parents, and colleagues to support student success both inside and outside the classroom.
  8. Actively participate in professional development opportunities to continuously improve instructional practices and contribute to the schools culture of improvement.
  9. Engage in school-wide initiatives, including extracurricular activities and committees, as needed.

A complete single health insurance package including vision and dental is fully covered by USD 494. Family insurance packages have low premiums. Free housing is provided to all first year teachers at USD 494.

Salary Information

Base salary for the 2024-25 school year is $46,800. The base salary will increase after negotiations for the 2025-26 school year are completed.

USD494, Syracuse, is located in western Kansas on highway 50 just 14 miles from the Colorado border and operates on Mountain Standard Time.  USD #494 is a large 2-A district with a PK - 6  building and a 7-12 building located on a common campus.  Both buildings continue to demonstrate high academic achievement and Syracuse High School has been recognized as a Blue Ribbon School.  The high school/middle school building was completed in the year 2000. The recent passage of a bond proposal by Hamilton County voters provided funding for a new multi-purpose gymnasium, agriculture education building, and modern track & field complex completed in October 2015. The district serves approximately 530 students and employs 45 licensed staff and 35 classified staff.  Syracuse High School provides rigorous curricula and a variety of courses including concurrent classes for qualifying high school students and six CTE pathways. District technology is continuously upgraded and all 9 - 12 students are issued laptops for use at school and at home. Our elementary school offers an exceptional Early Childhood program and free all-day Kindergarten. Recent additions include two new state-of-the-art computer labs and technology upgrades for yet another lab as well as interactive classroom applications.  Our third through sixth grades are departmentalized to help prepare students for junior high. Strong progressive leadership in both buildings and excellent teachers district-wide keep USD #494 on the cutting edge academically.
