Elementary School Principal
Reports to/Supervised by: Superintendent of Schools
Job Goal:
To use leadership, supervisory and administrative skills to promote the educational development of the individual student and, through that development, student achievement that ensures school accreditation. The degree of freedom to act is significant, as many decisions will be made using administrative discretion with district policy serving only as a guide, not a blueprint, for action.
Achieving academic excellence requires that the school principal work collaboratively to direct and nurture all members of the school staff hired by the Board of Education, and to communicate effectively with parents. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for scheduling, curriculum development, extracurricular activities, personnel management, emergency procedures, and facility operations.
Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Educational Administration required
- Kansas licensure in building-level leadership
- Successful prior relevant experience as a classroom teacher and administrator
- Broad working knowledge of child development, learning theory, curriculum research, testing and measurement, strategic planning, professional staff development, personnel practices, and managing a building budget
- Skills in quantitative analysis and evaluation
- Effective interpersonal and leadership skills; experience facilitating communication between divergent groups and in group decision-making
- Familiarity with relevant laws and regulations
- Effective administrative, leadership, and management skills
- Excellent speaking, writing, and technology skills
- Ability to work cooperatively and constructively with others, including the ability to communicate effectively with broad and diverse audiences
- Ability to handle a fast-paced, intense work environment
- Ability to manage job responsibilities and meet the established district outcomes
Performance Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Oversee safe and orderly schools.
- Manage, evaluate and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the school consistent with the philosophy, mission, values and goals of the school, including instructional programs, extracurricular activities, and discipline systems to insure a safe and orderly climate
- Supervise in a fair and consistent manner effective discipline and attendance systems with high standards, consistent with the philosophy, values and mission of the school
- Take appropriate action when students exhibit emotionally/physically distressed behaviors
- Ensure compliance with all laws, board policies and civil regulations regarding building maintenance, program evaluation, personnel management, office operations, and emergency procedures
2. Ensure student achievement for all student groups.
- Collect and report date on academic achievement by all student groups
- Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all students and staff for academic performance and responsibility for behavior
- Monitor assessment of all students in basic skill areas
- Evaluate effectiveness of teaching materials, activities and approaches, and provide assistance when necessary
3. Build positive school/community relations
- Support the school and district mission
- Promote positive relationships between all persons in the school community
- Facilitate effective building leadership teams
4. Develop constructive student/adult relations
- Cultivate staff behaviors that promote respect for authority, tolerance of diversity, and appreciation of each student's potential
- Create an environment that encourages students to take responsibility for their behavior and creates high morale among staff and students
5. Oversee effective and efficient staff performance
- Supervise the instructional programs of the school, evaluating lesson plans and observing classes on a regular basis to encourage the use of a variety of instructional strategies and materials consistent with research on learning and child growth and development
- Plan in-service activities based on student and staff needs and ensure that they are effectively implemented
- Keep the staff informed and seek ideas for the improvement of the school
- Recruit, supervise and evaluate instructional staff in accordance with policy and law
- Interact effectively with building/district personnel
6. Practice responsible fiscal, facility, and resource management
- Organize effective budget planning procedures
- Ensure building expenditures do not exceed the limits set forth by the board-approved budget
- Maintain building records and property
7. Model positive professional attributes
Performs other tasks and assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent and in accordance with the provisions of the USD 464 Board of Education.
Evaluation: Evaluated annually by Superintendent of Schools based upon the Principal job description and principles of effective administration leadership.
Work Year: 12 months - 242 days, salary to be established by the board
Appointment: As established by board, subject to annual review and renewal
