Burlington Middle School is seeking a dynamic Counselor for grades 5 through 8 to join our team who will help students develop a positive self-image, overcome problems that impede learning, and assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their fulfillment as mature and responsible young adults.

Primary Responsibilities:

Provide and interpret test data information to students which will assist them in making pre-vocational choices compatible with their interests, personalities, and aptitudes.

Provide services that enable students to develop self-understanding so that they may live with their own decisions in the problem-solving process.

  1. Be available to counsel every student individually regarding problems at home, family relations, health (alcohol and drugs), and emotional adjustment.
  2. Recognize student issues which must be referred to other professional agencies for solution.
  3. Work to prevent students from being at risk of failure.
  4. Participate in parent-teacher conferences to help promote understanding of the student and his/her development.
  5. Provide in-service programs to the professional staff on test data, research information, and the teacher's role in guidance functions.
  6. Help teachers recognize individual differences in students and assist the teachers in meeting the needs of students by providing and interpreting test data information.
  7. Assist teachers in making appropriate referrals for special services.
  8. Maintain an objective point of view in student-teacher relationships.
  9. Communicate the role of the counselor to the school and community.
  10. Coordinate the guidance program and establish a yearly program in advance planning with the Principal.
  11. Initiate, assemble, and maintain records necessary in the performance of a guidance counselor's duties.
  12. Build the master schedule, with the principals input and approval.  Use student/parent-signed enrollment forms to determine student placement in electives.
  13. Guide students in grades 5,6, 7, and 8 in planning their educational programs by assisting them in course and subject selection during the enrollment process.
  14. Develop a follow-up program by keeping in touch with middle school students who have been promoted to high school to help determine the success of the elementary and middle school guidance services in the district.
  15. Work in conjunction with the high school counselor to guide students in planning their educational program, and assist them in course and subject selection during the enrollment process.
  16. Confer with parents of 8th graders concerning the students educational plan.
  17. Provide orientation services for all students and assist in their transition from one grade and/or school to another.
  18. Provide parents with information about school policies and procedures, course offerings, educational and pre-vocational opportunities, and requirements and resources that will contribute to the fullest development of their children.
  19. Operate all equipment appropriately as required.
  20. Observe and follow all school district policies at all times.
  21. Respond to information requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner.
  22. Keep student and personnel information and records confidential.
  23. Implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Plan.
  24. Serve as the District and Building Test Coordinator.
  25. Assume other guidance-related duties as assigned by the Principal.
  26. Coordinate career awareness activities with all grade levels.
