Full time general education teacher; placement will be within K-6 grade bands and expected for upper elementary. West Elk's class size typically requires two grade level teachers and individual home room classes have between 14-24 students dependent on grade enrollment throughout the elementary building. 

The West Elk Elementary has moved into their new facility on our main campus as of last year. The facility is furnished with a multi-purpose room for elementary PE, a spacious library, computer lab, storm shelter, 18 classrooms (including SPED), a conference room, and teachers lounge. All new technology and student and teacher furniture. 

West Elk operates on a 4-day school week with Mondays off. The teaching contract totals 154 student days with 9 professional days.

Two full-time Title I teachers are assigned to the building.

After-school tutoring is provided free every school night and a three week summer program is provided for any K-8th grade student.

Adjacent to the Elementary is a school operated early childhood center under construction that will serve infants to 12 years of age open year round.

Salary Information

Detailed salary information may be obtained upon request. The current base salary is $45,470 and district practice is to accept all years of prior teaching experience.

West Elk USD 282 is located in Howard, Kansas, serving approximately 400 students in preschool through graduation. West Elk Schools operate on a four-day school week (155 student days/163 teacher contracted days), with Monday being the non-school day. West Elk USD 282 is classified as a 2A district and offers most traditional JH/HS athletics and extra-curricular activities for students. The district offers summer programming for K-8 students. West Elk has been recognized for high academic rigor and success, with the success of over 86% of our students meeting or exceeding Math and Reading standards on Kansas Assessments. 

 

West Elk has competitive extra-curricular programs, and strong community support. Recently, the patrons of West Elk USD 282 showed their support by passing a bond election, with a 75% voting approval, for the purpose of building a new elementary wing, multi-purpose room, and staff work space. These facilities are now occupied by the PREK-6th grade elementary students.

 

West Elk is in the process of opening a full time early childhood center/daycare (birth-12) facility on campus. Enrollment for children of staff are protected and prioritized.
