Title:    Classroom Instructor

 

Reports to:  Principal and/or Program Director

 

Purpose and Objectives of the Position:  The Classroom Instructor creates a positive learning environment to facilitate the personal- social- and intellectual development of students.  In order to respond to the individual needs and abilities of students- the Classroom Instructor must work closely with other staff and the administration of USD #493.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Establish a positive learning environment and respond to the individual needs of students.
  • Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
  • Work effectively with community organizations.
  • React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Support the value of an education.
  • Support the philosophy and mission of USD #493.

 

  1. Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions.
  • Requires prolonged sitting and standing.
  • Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move- lift- carry- pull or push heavy objects or materials.
  • Occasional stooping- bending and reaching.
  • Must work indoors and outdoors year-around.
  • Must work in noisy and crowded environments.

 

  • General Responsibilities.
  • Plan and implement effective lessons- using time- materials and resources effectively.
  • Motivate students through effective communication and evaluative feedback.
  • Display a thorough knowledge of curriculum and subject matter.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the needs of students and provide for individual differences.
  • Set high expectations for student achievement and behavior.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with others.
  • Establish and maintain a positive climate for learning through appropriate classroom management.
  • Maintain current curriculum and instructional practices.
  • Coordinate and supervise field trips.
  • Assist with the activities of student organizations.
  • Attend and assist when necessary with school events such as musical programs- athletics- student recognition ceremonies- graduation and open house.
  • See that district policies are observed during all activities.
  • Obtain advance approval of the principal for all activities and expenditures.
  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
  • Maintain current knowledge of technology and its application in education.
  • Present an appropriate appearance at all times.
  • Take and maintain accurate attendance records.
  • Maintain current up to date grade books within student management system.
  • Other duties as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff which are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications of the position.

 

 

Knowledge- Skills and Abilities Required:

  • A valid teaching license issued by the Kansas State Board of Education and Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office.
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Desire to improve career improvement.

 

 

Evaluation:

 

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the USD 493 Board of Education’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.

USD 493 in Columbus, Kansas is located in the southeast corner of the state. We are about a twenty-five minute drive from Pittsburg, Kansas and about the same distance from Joplin, Missouri. Columbus is a small community with a population of about 3,200 people. The district encompasses a large geographical area of rural communities.

The district has approximately 925 pre-K-12 students, housed on four campuses. The pre-k - 1st grade students are at Park Elementary, 2nd and 3rd grade students are at Highland Elementary, 4th - 8th grade students are at Central School, and 9th - 12th grade students are at Columbus Unified High School.

USD 493 has met the Standard of Excellence on several of the state assessments.  Students have been successful in a variety of academic and extracurricular activities.
