We are currently seeking a versatile Transition/High School instructor with an interest in providing students with meaningful work experiences, job skills, and independent living skills to join our campus program. Kansas State School for the Blind (KSSB) offers three pathways for students 18-21: College and Technical Education; Project SEARCH; and our LIFE (Lifetime Independent-Focused Experience). Our LIFE program is for students who need additional support to access and develop skills that lead to increased independence and satisfaction as adults. These skills are developed both on campus and in the community. Some of KSSBs innovative, on-campus programs for our LIFE students include: Our Brailled Bean Coffee Business; the Coffee Cart Operation; the Makerspace Production Site; Housekeeping; and Cafeteria sites.

These programs provide students with hands-on experience and real-world skills development and promote independence and self-sufficiency, which are critical for students with visual impairments.

Transition Instructor for Middle School & High School

LOCATION: Kansas City, Kansas; may provide outreach services episodically

EMPLOYMENT DATE:  August 1, 2025

SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday (181 days); 40 hours a week, actual hours to be determined; this position may require attendance at special events outside of normal working hours, including weekends

JOB DESCRIPTION: Provide work, job, and independent living skill experiences to students who are blind/low vision in our Transition (18-21) and/or High School programs. Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) that address both academic and functional (Expanded Core Curriculum) skills. Utilize campus facilities and community-based settings to create engaging and real-world learning experiences to promote independence and job readiness.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Develop and implement IEPs that align with state standards and meet the unique needs of each student.
  2. Ability to provide instruction in a variety of academic subjects, including language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies in pragmatic settings.
  3. Teach functional skills (Expanded Core Curriculum) that promote independence and success in daily living, such as orientation and mobility, assistive technology, socialization, and employment.
  4. Utilize a variety of teaching methods and strategies to engage students and accommodate diverse learning styles.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of the IEP process, including a multidisciplinary approach to instruction.
  6. Develop and monitor a detailed student schedule that ensures student engagement, participation (or partial participation, as they are able), decision-making, communication, and is meaningful and interesting to the student.
  7. Conduct vision-specific and academic-related assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction as needed.
  8. Demonstrate knowledge of the technology used by students who have a visual impairment across MS and HS grade levels.
  9. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the Braille Code.
  10. Communicate expectations clearly to Instructional Assistants and provide training in their support of students, as needed.
  11. Collaborate with parents, administrators, and other professionals to ensure student success.
  12. Maintain accurate student records and documentation.
  13. Participate in professional development activities to stay current on best practices in education.
  14. Create a positive and supportive learning environment that fosters student growth and development.
  15. Willingness to attend and actively participate in Collaborative Learning and Staff Meetings.
  16. Demonstrate a commitment to the mission and values of the Kansas State School for the Blind.
  17. All other duties as assigned.


Attend all required meetings; use appropriate communication skills. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A bachelors degree is required. 
  2. Valid Kansas teaching license with appropriate endorsement(s) for middle/high school/transition instruction.
  3. TSVI (Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments) certification (KS) is preferred. Must be willing to complete TSVI certification within three years from the date of hire.
  4. Experience working with students who are blind/low vision.
  5. Knowledge of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) for blind/low vision students.
  6. Strong understanding of differentiated instruction and inclusive teaching practices.
  7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  8. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  9. Demonstrated creativity and innovation in instructional design.
  10. Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  11. Represent KSSB professionally and appropriately at all times.
  12. Valid drivers license; willing and able to transport students in a state vehicle.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All offers of employment from Kansas State School for the Blind (KSSB) are contingent upon background check results and any applicable workplace references. Background checks are completed via the KS Bureau of Investigation, Backgrounds Plus consents, Kansas Department of Children and Family Services, and Dru Sjodin National Sexual Offender Registry. KSSB may contact previous employers for workplace references. Within 30 days of employment, a tuberculosis test (and any applicable treatment), as well as a health certificate must be completed by a medical provider at the cost of the employee.
