JOB BRIEF:  

  • The Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction, support, and advocacy for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing. This position involves collaborating with general education teachers, special education staff, and families to ensure students have access to the curriculum, appropriate accommodations, and communication supports necessary for academic success. 

QUALIFICATIONS:   

Education & Certification:

  1. Bachelors or Masters degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field. 
  2. Valid state teaching license with an endorsement in Deaf Education or eligibility to obtain one. 
  3. Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) preferred or willingness to develop proficiency. 

Experience & Skills:

  1. Experience working with students who are Deaf or hard of hearing in an educational setting. 
  2. Strong understanding of language development, auditory training, and assistive technology for students with hearing loss. 
  3. Ability to adapt instruction to meet diverse learning needs. 
  4. Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. 
  5. Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment. 
  6. All USD 383 employees must pass a background check.

REPORTS TO: Director Of Special Education. 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Instruction & Student Support:

  1. Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing. 
  2. Provide direct instruction in communication skills, language development, auditory training, self-advocacy, and other areas as needed. 
  3. Utilize various communication modes, including American Sign Language (ASL), Signed English, spoken language, or other systems based on student needs. 
  4. Adapt and modify curriculum to support accessibility for students with hearing loss. 
  5. Support students with the use and maintenance of assistive technology, such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and FM/DM systems. 

Collaboration & Consultation:

  1. Work closely with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers to implement appropriate accommodations and modifications in the classroom. 
  2. Provide training and support to staff regarding hearing loss, communication strategies, and inclusion practices. 
  3. Collaborate with audiologists, speech-language pathologists, interpreters, and other professionals to support student needs. 
  4. Act as a liaison between the school, families, and community resources to support students educational and social development. 

Assessment & Compliance:

  1. Conduct assessments and monitor student progress to inform instruction and IEP development. 
  2. Maintain accurate records of student progress and service delivery. 
  3. Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including IDEA and Section 504.
  4. Other duties as assigned by administration.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on evaluation of certified personnel.

  3. For the 2025-2026 school year, USD 383 will pay the full health insurance premium for employees (Option C and Option D) and short-term disability insurance.

  5. 11 Paid Sick Leave days and 2 Personal days.   

RETIREMENT:  

  1. USD 383 makes monthly contributions to a 403(b)-retirement account for all certified and eligible employees.   
  2. KPERS (Kansas Public Employees Retirement System): 6% monthly staff contribution. Vested after five years.    

TECHNOLOGY:    

  • District provided devices - iPad, laptop and/or desktop for certified staff.    

PAID COLLABORATION TIME.  

Salary Information

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY:     

  • Full-time school year position  
  • Based on Salary Schedule.    
  • 2024-2025 Salary Schedule 
    2025-2026 Salary yet to be established.
