Purpose Statement
The Alternative School Principal provides visionary instructional leadership to support at-risk and nontraditional learners in grades 7–12. This position is responsible for creating a safe, supportive, and student-centered learning environment that promotes academic achievement, social-emotional growth, career readiness, and successful transitions back to traditional settings or graduation. The Principal collaborates with district leadership, families, and community agencies to remove barriers to learning and ensure equitable access to educational opportunities.
This job reports to Superintendent.
Essential Functions
Instructional Leadership
• Lead implementation of alternative education models including credit recovery, blended learning, and flexible scheduling.
• Supervise, evaluate, and support staff to ensure instructional excellence.
• Guide curriculum development aligned to Kansas College and Career Ready Standards.
• Analyze student data to improve attendance, behavior, and academic outcomes.
• Plan and facilitate professional development.
Student Services and School Climate
• Foster a trauma-informed, restorative, and inclusive school culture.
• Implement MTSS/PBIS frameworks.
• Oversee student discipline and intervention planning.
• Support individualized graduation pathways.
• Engage families and guardians in student success.
Operations and Compliance
• Manage site budgets, staffing, and facilities.
• Ensure compliance with Title I-D and other applicable programs.
• Prepare required reports and documentation.
• Participate in due process hearings as assigned.
• Maintain safe school operations.
Community and Agency Collaboration
• Serve as liaison with community corrections, DCF, juvenile justice, mental health agencies, and Ft. Riley.
• Coordinate Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) programming.
• Represent the school in community forums.
District-Level Responsibilities (as assigned)
• Support district truancy processes.
• Assist with interagency coordination.
• Participate in district leadership initiatives.
Other Functions
• Performs other related duties as assigned for ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Qualifications
Required:
• Kansas Building Leader or District Leader License.
• Master’s degree in education or related field.
• Experience working with at-risk or alternative student populations.
• Demonstrated success improving student outcomes.
Preferred:
• Alternative education leadership experience.
• Knowledge of MTSS, PBIS, and restorative practices.
• Experience collaborating with juvenile justice and social service agencies.
