Primary Purpose
Implement district health services program to best meet the needs of the student population at the
assigned school. Provide health services to students. Promote health and safety education for
students and preventive health practices for students.
Qualifications
Education/Certification(s)/License(s):
Valid registered nurse license (RN) from the Kansas Board of Nursing
Current automatic external defibrillator (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
certificates
Such alternates to the above qualifications as the Board of Educations may find appropriate
or acceptable.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects
Ability to implement policies and procedures
Knowledge of basic first aid
Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills


Experience:
1 year nursing experience preferred

Essential Job Functions
Duties/Responsibilities:
1. Provide direct care using professional assessment skills, the nursing process, individualized
healthcare plans (IHPs), and established school health protocols.
2. Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students.
3. Assess student problems, communicate with parents regarding individual students,
including notifications of accident or illness, and ensure appropriate referrals and follow up
as needed.
4. Serve as a liaison between school personnel, the family, healthcare professionals, and the
community.
5. Secure emergency medical care for students as needed.

6. Develop and implement individualized healthcare plans (IHPs) and evaluate outcomes of  skilled and direct nursing care and procedures for medically fragile students to ensure safe  integration of the student into the school environment. 

7. Serve as health advocate for students. 

8. Ensure that medications are administered to students according to district policy and  procedures. 

9. Establish and implement effective procedures for carrying out mandatory screening  programs.  

10. Make home visits to help with student health problems as necessary. 

11. Participate in development of health education curriculum, educate faculty and staff as  needed on health-related topics, and provide health education to individuals and groups  including contributing to communications to parents and the local community regarding  health issues. 

12. Collaborate closely with superintendent, building principals, and other staff and provide  leadership to ensure a healthy school environment. Work to meet the health needs of the  general school population and those students with identified health conditions. 

13. Participate in general education intervention, Section 504, or IEP meetings of students with  identified health needs. Work with district personnel regarding implementation of IEP goals  and services. 

14. Advise campus administration in crisis or emergency situations and participate in  assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse. 

15. Works with the Kearny County Health Department and all Health Care Providers concerning  immunizations and communicable diseases. 

16. Cooperates with local physicians, optometrists, and dentists for the welfare of the students  and personnel. 

17. Develop and recommend district policies and procedures to promote the health and  wellness of students and staff. 

18. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required, including  clinical records and accurate and confidential student health records such as immunization  records, medication administration records, individual student treatment records, and IHPs. 

19. Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory. 20. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws and regulations and board policy. 21. Report potential health and safety hazards to principal. 

22. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. 

23. Comply with all district policies, rules, and regulations. 

24. Other duties as assigned.

Mental Demands/Physical Requirement/Environmental Conditions: 

1. Requires the ability to maintain emotional control while under stress and in stressful  situations. 

2. Requires the ability to use standard medical clinic equipment, special needs adaptive  equipment, and standard office equipment including computer and peripherals for  prolonged periods of time. 

3. Requires the ability to frequently use repetitive hand motions, grasping/squeezing, and  wrist flexion/extension. 

4. Requires the ability to frequently stand, sit, kneel/squat, bend/stoop, push/pull, twist, or  reach. 

5. Requires the ability to frequently lift and carry items ____ lbs. or less. 

6. Requires the ability to work with frequent interruptions. 

7. Requires timeliness and regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.

Deerfield`s population is approximately 825 and is located in Kearny County in Southwestern Kansas.  Primarily a rural district, Deerfield is nestled on Kansas`s western plains, located along Highway 50/400, just 14 miles west of Garden City.  Deerfield is a wonderful friendly small farming community in which to live and raise a family.  The community takes pride in its schools and supports activities. The Spartan community recently passed a $7.5 million dollar bond to upgrade district facilities.  Our schools are located at the corner of 8th and Beech Street on the west side of town.

USD 216 Deerfield serves students Pre-K through 12th grade on a four-day work week, Monday through Thursday for students and staff, and typically has 200 to 225 students. Our 1A school district is very proud of our academic success and our advanced technology.   The district`s mission statement is, "Students Achievement is NUMBER ONE!"  The district`s vision will ensure all students will be college and career-ready upon graduation by providing the best education through quality instruction and a rigorous curriculum.  USD 216 expects students to assume equal responsibility for their learning.

All classrooms are equipped with a wireless network throughout the district, and all the buildings are air-conditioned.  1 to 1 Chrome Book initiative was developed and implemented with Google Docs for grades K through 12th.  A full-time technology coordinator is on staff. 

The district is a member of the High Plains Special Education Cooperative and the Southwest Plains Regional Service Center. We operate a 21st Century After School Program in our Elementary. Teachers and staff are supported with strong resources throughout the district, and a focus is put on meaningful professional development. 

Deerfield Elementary is comprised of a preschool program through fifth grade. We desire to create a cooperative community where students and educators strive for academic excellence within a safe, structured, and supportive environment. Deerfield Middle School includes 6th through 8th grades and is located in the MS/HS building. Deerfield High School includes 9th through 12th grades. Deerfield MS/HS is putting a strong focus on CTE Education and providing our students with many opportunities through class offerings and developing work-based learning programs. In our CORE subject areas provide a strong curriculum and are growing and expanding as a PBL school.  Extra-curricular activities include FCCLA, Forensics, Scholar`s Bowl, All-School Play, STUCO, Football, Volleyball, Cross-country, Basketball, Track, Powerlifting, Trap Shooting, Cheer.
