The Kansas City- Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22-000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy- the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

 

With Head Start/preschools- 28 elementary schools- 7 middle schools- and 5 college and career academies/high schools- we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic- 24% African American- 9% White- and 6% Asian. To serve our students- the district employs approximately 4-000 employees including more than 1-800 teachers.              

 

JOB GOAL:

Provide nursing services in an assigned school or cluster of schools- under the supervision of a Lead School Nurse or School Nurse with a Registered Nurse certification. This employee is responsible for meeting students’ medical and physical needs in the classroom or educational environment as assigned by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assess student’s health through observation- screening procedures- and communication to establish a protocol permitting students to function effectively at school- home- and community.
  • Encourage parents/guardians to acquire periodic health and dental examination for students.
  • Notify the student’s parent/guardian when health problems have been detected that require professional attention.
  • Assist the parent/guardian to understand the health needs of the student (e.g.- interpretation of screening results and the need for a referral).
  • Enforce the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) immunization requirements and assist in the prevention and control of communicable diseases.
  • Administration of student medications according to District Policy and Procedures.
  • Work within a framework of the Kansas Nurse Practice Act for implementation of laws and regulations pertaining to school health and Kansas Licensure Requirements.
  • Complete job-related assignments under the supervision of a Lead Registered Nurse- School Nurse (RN) and the Health Services Coordinator.
  • Provide emergency care for student accidents and sudden illness.  Notify parent/guardian if accident/illness warrants.  Detain student in the nursing clinic until parent/guardian assumes responsibility.
  • Facilitate therapeutic relationships with students- families- and community.
  • Participate in all Nursing Professional Development and In Services as Directed by your RN Supervisor.  

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Hold and maintain current Kansas practical nursing licensure.
  • Minimum of two (2) years health related experience.
  • CPR/AED certification AHA BLS.
  • Exercise assessment and critical thinking skills when delivering nursing services in the school setting.
  • Maintain confidentiality and use good judgment in handling and dispersing information while applying new concepts and details and adapt easily to change.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and to work independently within established guidelines in a timely manner.
  • Dependable in attendance and observance of duty hours.

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION:  Maintains communication with internal and external stakeholders such as Board of Education- Educational Agencies- Federal/State/Local agencies- teachers- other school personnel- parents/guardians- businesses- and community to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students. Compiles data for statistical purposes. Maintains confidentiality regarding district records. Ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication. Includes giving instructions- assignments- or directions to subordinates or assistants as needed to carry out duties.

 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written- oral- diagram- or schedule form. Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable- functional- structural- or composite characteristics of data- people- or things.

 

LANGUAGE SKILL: Ability is required to schedule several activities- meetings- and/or events; often gather- collate- and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  186 days

SALARY:   All certified staff will be paid in accordance with the NEA-KCK Salary Schedule           

FLSA STATUS: Exempt 

REPORT TO:    Director of Health Services- Health Coordinator and/or Lead School Nurse           

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policy
