TITLE:  Associate Superintendent of Leadership & Learning and Diploma+

 

LOCATION:  Central Office and Training Center

 

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

 

With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.

 

JOB GOAL: Serve as the instructional leader for the District providing leadership in the development and maintenance of effectiveness and excellence in the educational programs of the district. Direct the operation, planning, development, and administration of all school-based programs in support of the Districts mission to ensure that all students are college and career ready. Provide regular support and guidance to the school administrators and assigned central office personnel, including the effective and efficient operation of the curriculum and instruction department, and the planning, development and implementation of staff development focused on and aligned with district and campus improvement plans.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Oversee the development and delivery of curriculum and instructional programs that incorporate district goals and support student achievement.
  • Monitor and reevaluate instructional programs on an ongoing basis using input from teachers and principals, applied research, and student data to determine effectiveness and improve outcomes. Recommend changes and adjustments where appropriate.
  • Supervises, coordinates, and evaluates the directors in the departments of Diploma +, Curriculum and Instruction, and the Executive Directors of Schools.
  • Assume primary responsibility for developing curriculum articulated and coordinated to effectively guide a sequential and aligned K-12 instructional program for instructional staff.
  • Facilitate the implementation and development of curriculum.
  • Coordinate the development of procedures related to curriculum and instruction.
  • Work cooperatively with district and staff to define district needs and serve as a support to the instructional program.
  • Facilitate effective school district curricular decisions.
  • Work collaboratively regarding the collection, review, interpretation and use of data to improve student achievement.
  • Obtain and use evaluative findings to examine curriculum/instructional program effectiveness.
  • Actively support the efforts of others to achieve district and campus goals and objectives and performance objectives.
  • Supervise the use of formative assessment practices.
  • Provide campus leaders with research-based strategies for academic achievement.
  • Exhibit commitment to continuous student improvement.
  • Encourage and model innovative thinking and risk taking and view problems as learning opportunities.
  • Participate in the district-level decision process to establish and review the districts goals and objectives and major classroom instructional programs of the district.
  • Remain well-informed and up to date about trends and developments in research and evaluation theory and practice.
  • Remain up to date on state mandates and priorities as they relate to assigned responsibilities.
  • Provide a final recommendation regarding the textbook adoption process and recommendations regarding instructional programs and materials related to the textbook adoption process.
  • Promote learning and high expectations for students and staff performance.
  • Anticipate, manage, and resolve conflicts.
  • Use a variety of communication tools and techniques to exchange information and ideas effectively.
  • Demonstrate clear and effective writing, speaking, and active listening skills.
  • Participate in effective budget planning and management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must hold a district level Kansas Administrator License.
  • Masters Degree in Education or related field required.
  • Doctorate Degree in Education preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in district-level instructional leadership using culturally proficient approaches
  • Previous experience (5 years required) years experience in district level leadership and building level leadership
  • Demonstrated success in the implementation of effective teaching and learning strategies and approaches

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION: Maintains communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Functions of the job include pertinent laws, codes, policies, and/or regulations; personnel processes; curriculum adoption process; program planning and development; and learning styles and curriculum models. Ability is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.

Terms of Employment: 261 days

Salary: Salary based on the Administrators and Supervisors Salary Schedule.

FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT

REPORT TO: Superintendent of Schools or Deputy Superintendent of Schools

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board of Education policy
