Job Summary

A K-6 Grade School Teacher in Kansas is responsible for providing a high-quality education that meets Kansas state standards, fostering the academic, social, and emotional growth of elementary-aged students. This role includes designing and delivering age-appropriate lessons, adapting instruction to meet individual needs, and creating a safe and supportive classroom environment.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Development & Instruction:

  • Develop and implement lesson plans in alignment with Kansas State Standards for grades K through 6.
  • Use a variety of instructional techniques (e.g., hands-on learning, cooperative learning, and technology integration) to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
  • Teach core subjects such as mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies, while fostering curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
  • Encourage active participation, ensure comprehension, and assess learning through various methods, including discussions, activities, and assignments.

Classroom Management:

  • Establish and maintain a positive classroom environment with clear expectations and procedures that promote respect and responsibility.
  • Implement positive behavior reinforcement strategies and use effective conflict resolution techniques.
  • Model and encourage social-emotional skills such as empathy, cooperation, and resilience.

Student Evaluation & Progress Monitoring:

  • Conduct regular formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on individual needs.
  • Document academic and behavioral progress, providing constructive feedback to students and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians through progress reports, conferences, and regular updates.

Individualized Support:

  • Identify students who need additional support or enrichment and tailor instructional methods accordingly.
  • Work closely with special education staff and other specialists to create and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with special needs.
  • Provide additional resources and interventions for students requiring extra help or advanced activities for those excelling.

Classroom Environment & Safety:

  • Create an inclusive, safe, and organized classroom that encourages independent learning and respect for diversity.
  • Implement school and state-mandated safety protocols and conduct regular drills to ensure student safety.
  • Foster a warm and welcoming atmosphere that supports the well-being of all students.

Professional Development & Collaboration:

  • Participate in Kansas-required professional development to remain current on state standards, instructional strategies, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with other teachers, administrators, and support staff to develop school-wide initiatives and share instructional resources.
  • Engage in ongoing communication with parents, families, and the community to build strong school-family partnerships.

Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of attendance, grades, and assessments as per Kansas educational regulations.
  • Prepare for and attend parent-teacher conferences, providing a clear overview of student progress and areas for growth.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and Kansas state-mandated events or assessments.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelors degree in Elementary Education or a related field; Kansas state teaching certification for K-6.
  • Experience: Experience teaching or working with elementary-age children is preferred.
  • Skills: Proficiency in classroom management, curriculum development, and communication with both students and adults.
  • Personal Traits: Patience, adaptability, empathy, a commitment to Kansass educational standards, and a passion for teaching and inspiring young learners.

Physical Requirements

The position may require standing for long periods, bending, stooping, and engaging in physical activities with young students.

Working Conditions

Teachers work primarily in a classroom setting, typically following the standard school schedule. Some after-school activities, meetings, or professional development sessions may be required.
