Elementary Counselor or Social Worker (.5 or Full Time)

USD 299 is seeking a elementary counselor or social worker for the 2025-2026 school year.  This position could be a full time or 1/2 time position. The job will entail providing a full range of services to students who need additional support. He or she will partner with school administrators, parents, and teachers to develop and implement plans that provide specialized support for selected students throughout the course of the school year.    

Essential Job Functions Include:

  1. Participates as a team member in the comprehensive IEP evaluation, review, and re-evaluation process.
  2. Participate in the general education intervention process to assist in interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures.
  3. Develops intervention strategies to increase academic success.
  4. Consults with parents, teachers, administrators and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students.
  5. Provides staff with essential information to better understand factors (cultural, societal, economic, familial, health, etc) affecting a students performance and behavior.
  6. Assists teachers with behavior management.
  7. Provides direct support to staff.
  8. Provides crisis intervention.
  9. Assists with conflict resolution and anger management.
  10. Helps children develop appropriate social interaction skills.
  11. Assists children in understanding and accepting self and others.
  12. Assesses students with mental health concerns.
  13. Helps school districts receive adequate support from social and mental health agencies.
  14. Participates in the referral of students to other agencies as appropriate.
  15. Identifies and reports child abuse and neglect.
  16. Provides consultation regarding school law and school policy including IDEA.
  17. Consult with parents regarding their children’s academic performance, behavior, and needs.
  18. Inform students and parents of their rights and responsibilities under federal and state law including compulsory attendance.
  19. Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.

Sylvan-Lucas Unified Schools is a rural school district located in Central Kansas on K-18 highway, just minutes north of Lake Wilson.  The Elementary School, located in Lucas, has 118 enrolled students (K-6) in 2024-2025.  Both the elementary (located in Lucas) and Jr/Sr high buildings have strong academic programs. 

The technology used in the district includes a 1:1 initiative in grades K-12. K-2 students use IPads while grades 3-12 students use laptops. Classrooms also utilize interactive touchscreen tv`s.  The district sets high standards for its students and has programs in place to help ALL students succeed. Our high school offers 21 dual credit courses to students, 5 CTE pathways to go along with our traditionally strong Fine Arts and Athletics Programs.  Our current KESA goals are in the areas of Responsive Culture and Relevance.

Extracurricular activities include a full offering of sports including football, cross country, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, and track. Non-athletic activities include cheerleading, forensics, scholars bowl, band, vocal, KAY Club, NHS and FFA.
