Mulvane School District is accepting applications for a School Resource officer

Police Officer Opening:

The Mulvane Police Department is accepting applications for School Resource Officer in partnership with USD 263. Mulvane Kansas is located on the county line between Sumner and Sedgwick counties, 20 minutes from Wichita and 15 minutes from McConnell Air Force Base. Mulvane is a progressive city with officials and community members alike, donating their time for the betterment of the community. No residency requirement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • 21 years of age
  • U.S. Citizen
  • No Prior Felony Convictions
  • Valid Kansas Driver’s License
  • Certification through KLETC/ KS-CPOST or ability to transfer
  • Must pass written test, background investigation, oral interview, drug test, physical, and psychological testing.

Shift Assignment: This is a school based position. Reports to Police Chief.

Salary: $20.47 to $26.20 Dependent upon qualifications.

Essential Functions:

1. Responsible for the protection of life and property. Tasks may include:

· Enforce traffic regulations, state laws, and city ordinances. Issue citations for violations.

· Respond to crime scenes and search, collect, and identify evidence.

· Conduct criminal and traffic investigations.

· Apprehend violators in a safe and constitutional manner following established rules and regulations. Transport detainees to appropriate facilities.

· Patrol the community routinely.

· Assist citizens with personal, family, and social problems. Intervene in domestic disputes.

· Answer citizen complaints and take necessary action.

· Investigate suspicious conditions and complaints.

· Alert citizens of hazardous and dangerous conditions

2. Responsible for performing administrative duties. Tasks may include:

· Conduct crime prevention surveys and other activities as needed.

· Complete all necessary official forms and reports.

· Prepare cases for successful prosecution

· Provide courtroom testimony when necessary.

3. USD 263 School Facilities including but not limited to Mulvane Middle School and Munson Primary School. Tasks may include:

· The SRO should have a working knowledge of: Constitutional and state law, Interview and interrogation, Investigations, Be Highly Visible, Advocacy within the juvenile justice system, Mandatory reporting.

· To be an effective teacher/guest speaker, the SRO should be capable of delivering law related education lessons on topics such as: Crime prevention social media School safety Victimization Laws pertaining to students Safe traffic stops other topics requested by staff/parents.

· To be an effective informal counselor/mentor, the SRO should be properly trained in: Mentoring Crime prevention, Empowering youth Resiliency, and Recognizing and supporting diversity Improving youth decision-making skills Trauma-informed practices.

4. All other duties assigned by supervisor.

Position Requirements:

Roles: This position requires the ability to work independently, work well with others, and perform in a team environment daily.

Latitude: Most duties are assigned, and then the SRO arranges tasks to complete them. Problem-solving and decision-making involving the protection of life and property is accomplished independently most of the time.

Education:

· High School Diploma or equivalent, required.

· Must have satisfied all requirements as set forth in K.S.A 74-4605 “Qualifications of Police Officer training requirements.

· 3 years of law enforcement experience, preferred.

· N.A.S.R.O Basic training preferred but not required.

Skills:

· Knowledge of law enforcement techniques and procedures.

· Knowledge of all federal, state, and local ordinances.

· Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public and to communicate effectively in both orally and in writing.

Certification/License:

· KLETC Certification, Valid Kansas driver’s license and a good driving record, required.
