Job Description

Position Title: Dean of Students
Location: Anderson County Junior Senior High School
Reports To: Building Principal
FLSA Status: Exempt
Contract: Certified contract (plus 10 extra days)
Salary: $50-000 - $70-000 based on education and experience (205 days)
Benefits: 100% coverage Blue Cross/Blue Shield single coverage health insurance tier 1 or 2 (or 92% of tier 3)

 

Position Purpose

The Dean of Students- under the direct supervision of the principal and in collaboration with the assistant principal- provides leadership in maintaining a safe- orderly- and positive school environment. The Dean focuses on student behavior management- attendance- supports instructional delivery- and assists with student support systems to promote academic success and a positive school culture.

 

Essential Functions

Student Behavior & Support

  • Develop- implement- and oversee school-wide behavior management systems and policies.
  • Serve as the primary resource for teachers regarding student behavior- attendance- and academic concerns.
  • Conduct parent and guardian conferences to address student behavior and attendance issues.
  • Monitor and support students with disciplinary actions- ensuring consistent and fair enforcement of policies.
  • Assist with the development and monitoring of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with exceptional needs.
  • Provide supplemental support for interventions that address barriers to student achievement- including social-emotional and behavioral challenges.

Campus Safety & Supervision

  • Maintain a safe and secure campus environment for students- staff- and visitors.
  • Supervise and coordinate school activities- ensuring student engagement and safety.
  • Conduct drills and disaster preparedness activities.

Administrative Support

  • Collaborate on planning- developing- and implementing the master schedule.
  • Serve on district-level committees- including expulsion hearings and other assigned committees.
  • Facilitate articulation with feeder schools to ensure smooth student transitions.
  • Provide support in meeting state and federal accountability targets- especially for significant student subgroups.

Communication & Community Engagement

  • Serve as a liaison between the school and community to promote a positive school image.
  • Collaborate with staff- families- and community partners to support student success.
  • Communicate proactively and professionally with all stakeholders regarding student behavior and school expectations.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Model professionalism- ethical behavior- and positive interactions with students and staff.
  • Respond to issues with sound judgment and timely decision-making.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Kansas administrative or teaching license (appropriate for 7–12 grades).
  • Have or be eligible to begin building leadership licensure.
  • Minimum of three years of experience working in education- including student behavior management.
  • Strong knowledge of adolescent development- classroom management- and behavior intervention strategies.
  • Excellent communication- organizational- and problem-solving skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a Dean of Students- assistant principal- or similar administrative role.
  • Knowledge of state and federal educational policies related to student behavior and accountability.
  • Experience working with students with diverse learning and behavioral needs.

 

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand- walk- talk- and hear.
  • Occasionally required to reach- stoop- kneel- or lift up to 25–50 pounds.
  • Ability to respond quickly in crisis situations and navigate the campus effectively.

 

Work Environment

  • Work in stressful and fast-paced educational environments.
  • May be exposed to students with challenging behaviors.
  • Perform duties both indoors and outdoors in various climate conditions.
