Job Description

 

Purpose:   The school psychologist is specially trained in psychology and education interventions that facilitate student academic- behavioral and social success in the school environment. The psychologist collaborates with students- teachers- and parents to uncover barriers to learning and to help design individualized solutions for identified needs.

Qualifications:

  1. Educational Specialist degree/Masters degree from an accredited college/university.
  2. Current Kansas State Teaching License with School Psychologist endorsement on file in the Central Office.
  3. Demonstrates a commitment to career development and life-long learning.

 

Essential Functions:

  2. Facilitate an understanding of child development and emotional health- among school professionals and family members.
  3. Administer and interpret individual assessments to help determine specific academic and behavioral needs of students.
  4. Participate in developing programming designed to meet individual needs of students.
  5. Assists in development of goals and strategies for educational improvement.
  6. Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.
  7. Ensure that all activities adhere to the professional standards and an ethical code for the school psychologist.
  8. Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
  9. Work effectively with community organizations and outside agencies. i. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  10. Support the value of an education.
  11. Support the mission and philosophy of ANW Special Education.
  12. Comply with all district policies- rules and regulations.

 

  1. Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
  2. Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods.
  3. Occasionally requires move- lift- carry- pull or push medium to heavy work objects or materials. Medium work is defined as exerting 20 to 50 pounds up to heavy work which is defined as exerting 50 to 100 pounds.
  4. Occasionally requires the ability to stoop- bend and reach. 
  5.  Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments.
  6. Must be able to work indoors and outdoors year-round.
  7. Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.

 

General Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct formal and informal assessments to determine a child`s cognitive abilities- learning styles- academic achievement level- emotional development and social skills in an effort to assign appropriate educational services to individual students.
  2. Help design curriculum-based content probes and progress monitoring strategies to guide instruction.
  3. Assist teachers and parents in developing an appropriate Individual Education Plan (IEP) for students.
  4. Ensure that Kansas State Board of Education guidelines for Special Education are met.
  5. Support psychological growth of students through individual and/or group counseling- use of positive behavioral support strategies- and parent counseling.
  6. Participate in the screening- child study team- identification- placement- follow-up and review of students for Special Education programs.
  7. Provide appropriate information for students and families regarding community agencies and services available to them.
  8. Provide appropriate direction- supervision and evaluate feedback to any assigned paraprofessional.
  9. Support educational improvement through legislative knowledge and involvement in building and district activities.
  10. Demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with others.
  11. Assist teachers in the development and implementation of curriculum modifications/accommodations and appropriate classroom strategies based on identified student needs.
  12. Maintain an inventory of materials- tests and supplies.
  13. Maintain appropriate- confidential records and provide timely reports.
  14. Keep abreast of new information- innovative ideas and techniques.
  15. Obtain prior approval for all special activities and expenditures.
  16. Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
  17. Other duties as assigned by the Director- which are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position.

ANW employs approximately 300 plus upbeat and energetic teachers, support staff, and administration that have students as our number one priority.

We provide support and mentorship for all new staff members.

ANW provides a week long new teacher academy with stipend pay to better equip our new staff with the tools they need to be successful. New teachers are also provided with one day per month with a new teacher trainer. 

ANW believes in providing training opportunities for professional growth.

We provide special education services to 8 school districts to enable special education students to reach and achieve their goals.

ANW also offers a forgivable loan program to help with tuition payment for special education classes on the participant`s plan of study at a Kansas university. In exchange for tuition payment the participant agrees to be in ANW`s employment for an equal amount of participating semesters. To date, ANW has paid for graduate classes for new staff. This program is not only available for teachers who are on waivers but also provisional license.

ANW provides special education services to USD#101 (Erie - Galesburg), USD#256(Marmaton Valley), USD#257(Iola), USD#258(Humboldt), USD#366(Yates Center), USD#387(Altoona - Midway), USD#413(Chanute), USD#479(Crest).

ANW service area is conveniently located 2 hours from Wichita, Kansas City, Topeka, Joplin, MO and Tulsa, OK. We are made up of small rural communities with access to larger cities.
