Licensed or certified by Kansas State Department of Education in Building Leadership or District Leadership.

SUPERVISES:                       

Teachers and para educators

JOB GOAL:                            

Administers, manages, supervises and provides educational        leadership so as to promote the educational and social development of each student in the alternative school and            vocational center.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Administration and Supervision:

a. Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school.

b. Works with Director in the preparation and management of the school budget and calendar.

c. Meets with Director and Board of Directors, makes reports as required, and carries out instructions of Director.

d. Works with Director to select the highest quality staff to fill vacancies.

e. Works with Director to develop student handbook which meets the specific needs of students.

f. Supervises all staff throughout the daily operation of the special day school.

g. Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists, and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the school’s administration.

h. Initiates, designs, and implements programs to meet specific needs of the school.

i. Supervises all non-academic as well as academic activities placed under jurisdiction; promotes health and enforces safety policies/regulation.

j. Authorizes requisitions originating in the building; safeguards and maintains supplies and equipment as per district policy.

k. In charge of transportation for students receiving services at the special day school.

l. Interprets and enforces district policies and administrative regulations.

m. Delegates authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the coordinator.

n. Procures substitutes in the absence of certified staff.

o. Assures that Individual Education Plans are appropriately implemented.

2. Instructional Leadership:

a. Leads in the development, determination of appropriateness, and monitoring of the instructional programs.

b. Schedules classes within established guidelines to meet student needs.

c. Assists in the development, revision, and evaluation of the curriculum.

d. Oversees academic instructional programs; observes teaching and classroom management practices; evaluates/assesses.

e. Supervises the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students.

3. Communication:

a. Communicates and interprets school policy and practices to staff, students, parents, and the public.

b. Keeps districts informed on a systematic basis of the progress of students staffed to the alternative school.

c. Communicates regularly with staff to determine needs of students, staff, and facilities.

d. Responds to written and oral requests for information.

e. Assumes responsibility for all official school correspondence and news releases.

4. Student Discipline:

a. Leads in the development, determination of appropriateness, and monitoring of the school-wide discipline program.

b. Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, according due process to the rights of the students.

c. Supervises accurate maintenance of records of students discipline issues.

5. Facilities:

a. Plans and supervises fire drills and an emergency preparedness program.

b. Supervises the daily use of the facilities for both academic and non-academic activities.

c. Provides for adequate inventory, security, and accountability of school property.

d. Assumes responsibility for the safety and administration of the school plant.

6. Professional Development:

a. Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings and reading professional journals and other publications.

b. Provide leadership in professional development activities for staff.

7. Manages all administrative duties with mobility for moving from place to place quickly; drives vehicle from place to place; agility and dexterity to use computer and other office equipment; monitors students, teachers, other staff members inside and outside buildings.

8. Individual Development Plan on file with the Interlocal outlining personal professional growth.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: As assigned by the Director.

 PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

1. Accomplishes the goals and policies of the Interlocal.

2. Proficient in the laws governing special education.

3. Demonstrates proficiency in educational leadership and supervision of instruction, planning, coordination, and communications.

4. Completes job requirements accurately and in a timely manner.

 WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Moderate environment conditions and noise levels some of time.  May be required to wear protective equipment including gloves for exposure control under limited circumstances.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT:           

As required by district policy.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
