Job description

Purpose: The Elementary School Assistant Principal provides professional leadership in organizing, administering, supervising, and evaluating a creative school program.  To accomplish these tasks, the Elementary School Assistant Principal works closely with the community, staff, and administration of U.S.D. No. 289.

Responsible to: Elementary Principal and Superintendent

Qualifications:

1. Masters Degree and Building Leadership License.

2. Excellent communication skills.

3. Strong background in instructional leadership.

4. Expertise in collaboration with staff members

5. Instructional coaching experience is 

6. Knowledge of curriculum planning is a positive.

7. Ability to manage change effectively. 

8. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Essential Functions:

1. Provides professional leadership in organizing, administering, supervising, and evaluating a creative school program.

2. Attends Board of Education meetings when requested.

3. Establish an optimal learning environment within the school.

4. Ensures that all school programs and activities conform to district guidelines.

5. Communicates effectively with all members of the school district and community.

6. Works effectively with community organizations.  

7. Reacts to change productively and handles other tasks as assigned.

8. Supports the value of an education.

9. Participates in the school improvement plan.

10. Supports the philosophy and mission of U.S.D. #289.

 

General Responsibilities:

1. Initiates, designs and implements programs to meet specific needs of the school.

 2. Assists in the development of a comprehensive curriculum and program of services in cooperation with teachers and central office staff.

3. Develops an atmosphere of respect, interest, and enthusiasm within the school.

4. Communicates openly and effectively with students, community, staff, and administration.

5. Supervises and provides for the general welfare of students during the school day, on school trips, and during school activities.

6. Maintains effective programs to strengthen and monitor pupil discipline, attendance, and individual progress.

7. Assists in selecting and assigning certificated and classified personnel.

8.  Assists in evaluating and counseling all staff members regarding their individual and group performance.

10. Participates in administrative and committee meetings, and such other meetings as are required or appropriate.

11. Attends special events held to recognize student achievement, and attends school sponsored activities, functions and athletic events.

12. Encourages the professional growth of teachers by advanced training, experimentation, and evaluation.

13. Administers district policies in the operation of the school.

14. Assists the principal in curriculum, assessment, student discipline, and evaluation of staff as needed.

15. Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists, and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the schools administration.

16. Complies with legal and regulatory requirements of the various governmental agencies.

17. Assists in planning and organizing the school day and year to provide for efficient operation of the school.

18. Coordinates or supervises such support services as maintenance, security, food services, recreational programs, financial and accounting functions, library activities, etc.

19. Works cooperatively with staff in sharing ideas, techniques, and procedures for the improvement of the learning environment.

20. Keeps abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques.

21. Adheres to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne  Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.

22. Follow up on all excessive student absenteeism.

23. Other duties as assigned by the Elementary principal or Superintendent.

 

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

1. Requires prolonged sitting or standing.

2. Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.

3. Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching.

4. Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.

5. Must work in noisy and crowded environments.

 

Terms of Employment:

Eleven month contract, see Board Policy for terms.

Evaluation:

The performance of this job will be evaluated by the elementary principal and superintendent according to Board Policy and state regulations.

Technology is also considered a large part of our curriculum and daily life at our schools. With a computer-student ratio of about 1:1 our students have access to seven (7) completely furnished computer/business labs as well as additional access in classrooms. Recent and ongoing updates to our building infrastructure include virtualization of servers and workstations, expansion of wireless access,  and the update of backbone technologies. In addition to a personal workstation and VoIP phone, many of our teachers have access to smart board resources in their classrooms to facilitate student instruction and communication with parents and community.

Wellsville, USD #289 is a 3A school district serving 765 students from K–12. The district also employs 52 certified personnel and 42 classified staff.  We are a rural community with a total district area of 130 square miles.Located just off I-35, Wellsville is 20 miles from the Kansas City metro area. Wellsville is only 26 miles from Lawrence and KU, and sits just 55 miles from Topeka.

 The district operates three attendance centers, Wellsville Elementary School, for grades Pre-K-5, Middle School grades 6-8, High School grades 9-12.  Each attendance center employs a full time principal.

 USD #289’s academic success can be measured by its ability to meet testing standards. USD 289 met the Standard of Excellence for Reading (grades 3, 5 6, 7, 8 & 11), Math (grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, & 11).  WMS gained Building Level Standard of Excellence in Science. WES gained Building Level Standard of Excellence in Math and Reading.

 The Wellsville district prides itself on its’ commitment to kids. Our pupil-teacher ratio remains low at 17:1; we provide full-day Kindergarten; a counselor at each building level – elementary, middle and high school; a district-wide Family Services Coordinator; a career counselor; our students have access to a variety of co-curricular activities; and a wide variety of special education services are provided to students who qualify.  Special education services are provided through East Central Kansas Cooperative in Education located in Baldwin City, Kansas

 As a member of the Pioneer League, the high school provides high-quality academics and leadership experiences for students in extracurricular activities, including athletics, music and the second largest FBLA program in the state of Kansas. The district also provides a variety of extracurricular activities for junior high students.

Wellsville owns their school buses and provides transportation for all pupils who live outside of the city limits.

The computer-student ratio is about 1:1.  In addition to six (6) completely furnished student computer/business labs, students have access to wireless with each building having mobile stations of at least 25 wireless computers in each mobile cart. Each teacher is provided a phone in the classroom.

 Our district has established and maintains a strong educational partnership with Neosho County Community College. In addition to providing concurrent credit courses to our high school students during the school day, Neosho County Community College conducts evening, weekend and summer classes for our students.
