Highland Community College, chartered on February 9, 1858, making it the first institution of higher education in Kansas, is a fully accredited, comprehensive, public two-year college. The main campus is located in the small town of Highland in Doniphan County in the northeast corner of Kansas. The town, with a population of approximately 900 people, is in an area characterized by wooded hills, rolling pastures, agricultural abundance, and friendly communities. Although its taxing district includes only Doniphan County, the College has a state-designated service area of eight other adjoining counties.

With a wide range of instructional programs, the College offers a solid transfer curriculum including several associate degree options, as well as certificate programs and job-specific training. On-campus enrollment is 600+. An additional 2,500+ students are served in the nine county service area that has four regional centers. Those four sites are located in Atchison, Baileyville, Perry and Wamego, Kansas. The regional program contributes a significant portion of the College’s credit hour generation and full-time equivalency. Finally, a full offering of online courses provides the opportunity for students to complete their learning completely online.

Highland Community College has traditionally filled the role of providing higher education courses for students intending to transfer to a four-year institution and complete a bachelor’s degree. In addition to its traditional transfer opportunities, the College also provides innovative technical education opportunities as a result of a merger with Northeast Kansas Technical College. The HighlandTechnical Center offers 13 certificate programs in 4 technical divisions: Construction Trades, Transportation, Business & Computers, and Health Services. The College also works with area businesses to provide custom training in technical areas and is excited to be a leader in technical education, being among the first technical institutions in the Midwest to offer expanded curriculum in instruction of waterborne automotive paints and hybrid-diesel electric training.

Highland Community College offers eleven varsity sports and is a member of the Kansas Jayhawk Conference, the National Junior College Athletic Association, and competes in Region VI.

Enviable campus apartment housing for 400 students, a Stadium Center with a newly turfed football field; a new track and soccer field; auditorium and dining facilities; a Wellness Center which sports a fitness area, six lane track, batting cages, and basketball/volleyball/tennis courts, all of which are available to the students and the general public new athletic weight room; a caring student support services program; comfortable library; and, above all, excellent electronic classroom and instructional facilities make the Highland Community College campus an outstanding place for students to live and learn.
