Job Title: Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing 

Reports To:  Assistant Director / Director of Special Education Services          

Position Purpose: 

Provides services to students meeting the criteria and identified as having deaf or hard of hearing eligibility so educational and functional progress can be enhanced.

 

Qualifications:

Bachelor`s Degree

Valid Kansas teaching certificate with Deaf or Hard of Hearing Endorsement

Must demonstrate advanced level of American Sign Language (ASL)-(SCIP rating)

Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and other staff members by using:

American Sign Language

Written English

Electronic Communication Systems

 

Physical/Emotional Requirements:  The incumbent may be required to use the below requirements during any part of the working day.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, speak and hear. 

The employee is frequently required to stand and reach with hands and arms.  

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Knowledge, Skills & and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, and standards of teaching.

Considerable knowledge of special education, deaf and hard-of-hearing including American Sign Language skills, and how to instruct in a bilingual environment.

Considerable knowledge or research-based instructional methods applicable for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in a bilingual environment.

Considerable knowledge of the texts, materials, supplies, and equipment necessary in carrying out educational or recreational programs for the deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Considerable knowledge of current literature, research, and sources of information in the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing students, including the Center for American Sign Language/English Bilingual Education and Research (CAEBER) methodology.

Ability to evaluate critically the educational achievements of students and adapt the curriculum to meet their educational goals.

Ability to use assessments and data to impact on instruction.

Ability to prepare lesson plans and organize an instructional program based on Kansas standards.

Ability to interpret the results of tests and have it reflected in individual student`s bilingual instruction.

Ability to maintain discipline and develop a rapport with students, as well as those students with additional disabilities by adhering to specific behavioral strategies for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Ability to communicate effectively in both English and American Sign Language.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

Teaches preschool, elementary, or secondary classes in academic, elective, or special subjects to educate deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Prepares, adapts, and delivers instructional material to deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Adapts curricula and uses research-based teaching methods based on assessment of student`s needs.

Evaluates student academic and behavioral progress using specific assessments for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Develops educational plans for the individual student based on accepted and approved research and the standards established by the Kansas Department of Education.

Infuses transition goals such as study, work, and recreational habits, time management, and other real-life goals.

Creates and maintains student data and prepares reports relative to the work.

Selects appropriate texts, learning aids, materials and supplies.

Participates in teacher training, as required.

Must complete all Special Education paperwork including IEPs and Medicaid billing.

 

Terms of Employment:

12 months; salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education.

 

Evaluation:

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board policy on evaluation of (administrators, professional staff, classified employees).
