Job Description of Assistant Director of Special Education

 

Qualifications:

Required Kansas Licensure with one of the following endorsement areas: district, building or program leadership, special education supervisor or coordinator.

Three years certified educational experience (special education experience preferred)

Certification of Health

 

Duties:

  1. Provide professional leadership in organizing, administering, supervising, and evaluating the effective delivery of special education service.
  2. Establish an optimum learning environment within the cooperative.
  3. Ensure that all special education programs and activities conform to federal, state, and district guidelines.
  4. Communicate effectively with members of the special education cooperative and members of served districts.
  5. Adhere to all district policies and guidelines.
  6. Operate equipment as required by responsibilities.
  7. Work effectively with community organizations.
  8. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  9. Support the value of an education.
  10. Support the philosophy and mission of the special education cooperative.

 

Other:

  1. Assist the Director in oversight of the general operation of the cooperative.
  2. Administer the policies, rules, and regulations of the cooperative.
  3. Provide leadership, information, and recommendations to assist the Board of Superintendents and Board of Directors in making prudent decisions regarding the operation and management of the special education cooperative.
  4. Assist in coordinating shared program responsibilities, and liaison with schools and other agencies.
  5. Represent school districts in contacts with local, state, and federal agencies in matters pertaining to special education.
  6. Assist in developing a functioning educational philosophy consistent with the values of the community, teachers, school administrations, and Board of Director.
  7. Communicate openly and effectively with students, community, staff, and administration.
  8. Promote an informed, working relationship between the special education cooperative and its patrons.
  9. Advocate acceptance of, and provision of services for, students receiving special education services.
  10. Consult with parents, teachers, and administrators in matters pertaining to the education of exceptional children.
  11. Develop an atmosphere of respect, interest, and enthusiasm within the cooperative.
  12. Encourage outstanding performance by persons within the special education cooperative.
  13. Provide leadership in planning and organizing staff development activities designed to promote more effective leadership, improve communication, and upgrade instruction.
  14. Assist in establishing a comprehensive program for the evaluation and improvement of the operations of the special education cooperative.
  15. Maintain due process procedures as required by law.
  16. Comply with legal and regulatory requirements of the various governmental agencies.
  17. Assist with the preparation of all reports and application renewals as required by granting agencies.
  18. Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
  19. Adhere to all special education cooperative policies.
  20. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director.
  21. Complete Targeted Improvement Grant application and administer TIP programs including the Teacher Induction Program
  22. Oversee WebKIDSS computerized IEP program
  23. Oversee the KSDE Management Information System (MIS)

 

Physical Requirements:

  1. Requires much independent travel.
  2. Must work in noisy and crowded environments.
  3. Some Irregular or extended hours.
