Job Summary:

This position is an employee of the Paola Recreation Commission.

The Assistant/Sports Director works alongside the Director to provide top notch recreation and leisure opportunities for the community. Key responsibilities of the Assistant/Sports Director will be to coordinate and administer comprehensive year-round youth and adult recreation programs, sport leagues, tournaments and special events. This position is responsible for overseeing operations of Recreation Commission facilities such as athletic fields and community buildings/gymnasiums. The Assistant/Sports Director is also responsible to provide exceptional customer service, marketing operations, website and registration design and special event development. The position will also attend and be present at certain community meetings and events pertinent to the Paola Recreation Commission.

 

Job Scope:

The Assistant/Sports Director coordinates and administers recreation programs and events including the recruiting, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating of employees. This position is responsible for coordinating recreation programs and recreation facility operations. Assistant/Sports Director is responsible for establishing and meeting program goals, reports and budgets. Work is performed with a substantial degree of independence within the framework of the prescribed policies and procedures. This employee is subject to the supervision of the Recreation Director.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assists in providing organizational direction and plays a key role in setting the tone in workplace morale, harmony and chemistry
Coordinates, promotes and administers various recreation programs and special events, with an emphasis on sports related program for the community
Develop, market, organize and supervise youth and adult sport leagues, programs, camps & tournaments
Recruits, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates the performance of volunteers, instructors, youth sport coaches and sports officials
Provide for the scheduling of practices for all youth sports leagues
Assist in supervising all sport facilities and ensure they are maintained properly and are safe and ready for use
Manages proper use of facilities, equipment and supplies
Participates in the development of departments marketing efforts for programs, leagues, special events and facilities
Assists with the development of promotional materials for programs, leagues and special events
Aids in seeking sponsorship opportunities for programs, league and special events
Maintains a detailed equipment inventory for facilities, program and special events

Participates in a variety of informational and public relations activities to make the public aware of program and event offerings and available facilities
Continually evaluate existing programs and implement new program opportunities to meet the needs of the community
Prepares detailed budget reports and maintains the budget operating within limits
Assists the Recreation Director with the development and management of program budgets
Completes written documents and prepares regular and special reports
Communicates effectively with the general public, supervisors, peers and subordinates to resolve problems
Actively participate in other department activities and events as well as all special events as needed

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelors degree in Parks and Recreation, Sports Management, or related field plus at least two (2) years of experience in Parks and Recreation or related field. Previous experience with sport league development, coaching or officiating in youth and/or adult sports is a plus.

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of the concepts, objectives, requirements and philosophy of recreation programming for all ages
Knowledge of rules, methods and procedures involved in planning, scheduling, organizing and evaluating program and special events
Must have excellent interpersonal, problem solving, negotiating, and organizational skills
Must be a team player
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
Must have excellent computer skills, including registration software, Microsoft Office Suite and Google Docs, Sheets and Forms
Must be able to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and holidays
Must possess current CPR/First Aid certification or must be willing to obtain them within a specified period of time
Ability to make decision with little supervision
Knowledge of office practices and procedures and general knowledge of accounting procedures
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other employees, other governmental agencies, and the general public contacted in the course of work

 

Physical Demands:

Requires medium physical work requiring the ability to walk and/or climb over rough terrain
Ability to perform light manual labor and field maintenance
Ability to work outside in varying weather conditions
May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time
Will be required to operate a computer
Will be required to operate all field maintenance equipment when necessary
Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
Must have a valid drivers license

USD #368, Paola, is a progressive rural district with an easy 20-minute access to the Kansas City metro area and its amenities.  Paola School District serves approximately 2,000 students.  The district includes two elementary schools (one K-2 and one 3-5), one middle school (6-8), and one high school (9-12).  The district includes an Adult Education center and the Parents as Teachers program.  Paola is the host district for an eight-district special education cooperative program.

Paola provides a mentoring program for first-year teachers.  Beginning teachers are paired with master teachers for support and guidance.  At the completion of the program, new teachers have fulfilled the Kansas State Department of Education requirements to move from an initial to professional teaching license.  Professional development is a vital part of continued growth for all licensed personnel.
