Transition Specialist

A Transition Specialist at SCKSEC #605 supports the special education and general education staff with instructional programming related to students with IEPs who are, or will be, entering the workforce in any capacity both during high school and post-graduation.  The specialist helps to provide pre-vocational and vocational training opportunities for students with disabilities.

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Degree/experience in the secondary education
  2. Appropriate Special Education endorsements, licensure, or waiver eligibility
  3. Previous experience in educating special needs students preferred
  4. Proven effective classroom and student behavior management skills
  5. Knowledge of current special education regulations surrounding transition
  6. Working knowledge of educational technology applications
  7. Current Driver’s License

Main Job Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Coordination of pre-vocational and vocational training opportunities for students with disabilities
  2. Assisting to develop work experiences and opportunities for students in Cooperation with IEP case manager
  3. Collaboration with community stakeholders, including local businesses in the Coop districts
  4. Aiding the IEP team in the transition of students from school to a more Independent environment within the community
  5. Provide assistance with job coaching and train staff in this area of job supervision
  6. Maintenance of SCKSEC’s CBT manuals
  7. Participate in IEP development for students of transition age; including
  8. Working with parents regarding post-secondary options for their child, including the Summary of Performance upon graduation
  9. Attend required trainings related to Fair Labor Standards and federal employment laws as it relates to student employment
  10. Collaboration with SCKSEC staff involved in the Indicator 13 and Indicator 14 file reviews, when assigned
  11. Make connections and collaborate with outside agencies to assist IEP teams and families with necessary transition documentation and paperwork
  12. Assist IEP case managers in finding the appropriate transition assessments to determine students’ needs
  13. Serve as a committee member, when appointed, for SCKSEC programs
  14. Participate and coordinate in community and SCKSEC events such as Disability Mentoring Day, Advocacy Day, and Job-A-Thon

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions

  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in an educational setting that is often fast-paced and high intensity.  Must be able to drive a vehicle and maintain a good driving record.

School districts served are: Pratt, Skyline, Macksville, St. John, Stafford, Kingman-Norwich, Cunningham, Anthony-Harper, Attica, Medicine Lodge, Kiowa, Haviland, Greensburg, Lewis, and Coldwater-Protection.  

In addition to the services provided in member district buildings, SCKSEC provides services at one alternative attendance center in Pratt and Life Skills Centers in Medicine Lodge and Kingman.
