Atchison Public Schools is accepting applications for Student Support Specialist for the 2022-2023 school year. 

 

Position description: 

  • Perform before school safety checks for each student.  This includes searching bags and securing electronics or other restricted items. 
  • Establish and maintain a close partnership with school personnel in order to provide for a safe school environment.  Assist school personnel with their efforts to enforce Board of Education policies and procedures.  Ensure school administrator/personnel safety by being present during school searches that mayinvolve weapons- controlled substances or- in such cases that- the student’s and/or guardian’s emotional state may present a risk to a staff member.
  • Collaborate with school administrator during any of the building/district crisis plans (fire- tornado- intruder- bomb).
  • Work to prevent juvenile delinquency through close contact and positive relationships with students.  Serve as a positive role model and mentor students fostering a positive image so that enhanced communication with student- staff- and parents can exist.
  • Assists the administrator with the Level and Point system.  This may include keeping track of records such as point sheets and academic grades. 
  • Assist in facilitating the personal- social- and intellectual development of students.
  • Assist in establishing a positive learning environment.
  • React to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner- meeting deadlines as assigned.
  • Communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with members of the school district and community.
  • Maintaining confidential student information.
  • Work as a team member.
  • Provides support to the building administrator- staff- and teachers who have referred a student to the safe area who are considered “out of instructional control.”
  • Assist the student in deescalating disruptive behavior(s).
  • Obtains information for the referring instructional staff that can be used to guide the office intervention.
  • Prepares the student to return to their classroom.
  • Notifies appropriate administrative staff of student behaviors.
  • Makes phone calls to parent- informing them of appropriate or inappropriate behaviors.
