Education Navigator - KDOCButler Community College • www.butlercc.edu The Education Programming Navigator will work to enhance the Kansas Department of Corrections existing high school equivalency (GED) and post-secondary programs and connect offenders with GED options, CTE programs, and post-secondary education in order to help them achieve their educational goals. The Navigators initial focus will be to assess each resident as they arrive at the Reception and Diagnostic Unit (RDU). The Navigator will disseminate the assessment information to the appropriate peer Navigator and/or KDOC staff, and work one-on-one with each resident to develop an Education and Employment Plan based on each residents educational needs and aspirations. Navigators will serve as academic and career advisors, linking learners to all services at the correctional facility. Navigators will work with residents to put their education plans into action by helping them refine their goals and connect them with practical solutions. Residents should know there is a plan and know what outcomes they are striving to achieve. Navigators are there to help them stay on track, stay motivated, engage them with self-improvement goals, encourage positive behaviors, and link them with support services as necessary. Navigators will extensively collaborate with each other, as adult education and postsecondary education are strongly linked, and the goal for many students is to move from adult education into postsecondary programs.
