To plan for, teach and provide instruction that will enable each student to master social and academic skills appropriate to age, grade level, language proficiency and individual capacity. ESOL is a program for teaching language and content to Emergent Bilinguals in strategic ways with evidence-based practices.  

LOCATION: Manhattan High School

QUALIFICATIONS:  

  1. Education:  Minimum of Bachelors degree in education from an accredited college or university.
  2. Valid KS Teaching License or the ability to obtain one with the appropriate grade level(s) and endorsement(s).
  3. Personalized pathways for specific endorsements (ESOL) can be discussed and may be established and supported for candidates hired for the position. 
  4. Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of individuals of diverse ethnic, cultural, educational, and economic backgrounds.  
  5. Solid understanding of the stages of second language acquisition. 
  6. Bilingual / Biliterate preferred, but not required.  
  7. All USD383 employees must pass a background check.

REPORTS TO:     

  • Building Principal and District ESOL Coordinator. 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:   

  1. Provide instructional support that will charter students receptive, productive, and interactive language modalities within the school environment.  
  2. Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for instruction of students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, educational, and economic backgrounds.  
  3. Provides classroom, individual and small groups instruction designed to meet individual needs, reinforce material designed to meet individual needs and to reinforce material initially introduced by teachers.  
  4. Increase each students level of English proficiency in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in accordance with ELP standards and annual ELP assessment. In addition, engage them in the central and content-specific practices associated with ELA & Literacy, Mathematics, Science and History/Government/Social Studies  
  5. Confers with parents/guardians, teachers and staff in regard to individual students.  
  6. Establishes and maintains cooperative and collaborative relations with others.  
  7. Devises and maintains such records and reports as necessary to the successful execution of the job as well as State and Federal Audits.  
  8. Possesses knowledge of the operation and use of various teaching equipment and technology.  
  9. Attends and participates in staff and faculty meetings and professional development.  
  10. Supervises instructional aide(s) and volunteers as assigned.  
  11. Performs other duties as assigned by the principal and/or ESOL Coordinator.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on evaluation of certified personnel. 

 

ABOUT MANHATTAN HIGH SCHOOL: Manhattan High School is a 9th through 12th grade high school. The estimated enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year is 1,975 students. School begins at 7:40 a.m. and releases at 3:05 p.m. Teachers teach 5 of 7 class periods with an additional Advisory period one day a week. The 2 open periods in a teacher's schedule are dedicated to an hour of planning and an hour dedicated to professional learning time. MHS utilizes a modified block schedule that consists of periods 1-7 being taught Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. Wednesday and Thursday are block schedule days. Wednesday consists of 1st period, Advisory, 2nd period, and 3rd period. Thursday's schedule consists of 4th through 7th periods. Every teacher is provided with a MacBook Air and an iPad. All classrooms are equipped with a short throw projector and an Apple TV. Every student is provided with an iPad. USD 383 uses Infinite Campus for our student information system, CANVAS for our LMS (learning management system) and Xello for our individual plan of study system. We teach a wide variety of electives, Career and Technical Education, concurrent, dual credit, and Advanced Placement classes. We have many official and unofficial career pathways and athletic and activity opportunities with incredible student involvement. We have high expectations for all students and staff. We are always working on ways to meet our students' needs, develop positive relationships, and improve how we teach the things we are passionate about.
