School Counselor - Kansas School for the DeafKansas School for the Deaf • www.ksdeaf.org/ POSITION TITLE: School Counselor EMPLOYMENT DATE: August 2023 SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 7:45 am - 3:45 pm; this position may require attendance at special events outside of normal working hours JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is crucial to improving student outcomes by overseeing Health & Wellness Program, providing student therapy and monitoring student progress regarding IEP goals, ensuring completion of reporting requirements, attending meetings, and using appropriate communication skills with staff and students, including American Sign Language (ASL), spoken and written English. Oversee program to promote overall healthy social and environment development and positive lifestyle choices: Coordinate positive behavior intervention, including but not limited to internal behavioral processes Provide short-term intervention services for students Collaborate and consult with internal and external resources to ensure appropriate services are available Conduct individual and/or group counseling with students utilizing a variety of therapeutic approaches to match individual needs Work associated with student therapy: Monitor student progress in attaining IEP goals Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff regarding student therapy needs May work with students who display aggressive behaviors Utilize standardized, therapist-developed, curriculum-based, and other appropriate materials/tests when conducting assessments Respond quickly to immediate student needs or crisis situations Reporting: Complete all scheduled reports including, but not limited to, student comprehensive re-evaluations, progress monitoring, internal reports and external reporting Interpret evaluations, assessments, and therapy progress to parents, students, staff, and other authorized personnel MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Master’s degree in school counseling. Fluency in manual communication (ASL). Ability to use and understand written English, signed English and ASL in appropriate modes; ability to make verbal and written reports; knowledge of basic human physiological needs. Ability to obtain Kansas Certification by KSDE in school counseling or intent to obtain school counseling license. One-year experience in a clinical or educational setting. Experience with deaf/hard of hearing students preferred. Preference to have additional endorsements/licensure such as play therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, and solution-based therapy. ASL/English assessments will be given at the interview. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All offers of employment from Kansas School for the Deaf (KSD) are contingent upon background check results and any applicable workplace references. Background checks are completed via the KS Bureau of Investigation, Backgrounds Plus consents, Kansas Department of Children and Family Services, and Dru Sjodin National Sexual Offender Registry. Within 30 days of employment, a tuberculosis test (and any applicable treatment), as well as health certificate must be completed by a medical provider at the cost of the employee.
