West Franklin USD 287 is located in Franklin County, KS and provides instruction to approximately 650 students. The district includes the following schools: West Franklin Elementary at Appanoose (PK - 5), West Franklin Elementary at Williamsburg (PK-5), West Franklin Middle School (6-8) and West Franklin High School (9-12). West Franklin USD 287 serves the communities of Centropolis, Pomona and Williamsburg. USD 287 is a member of the Three Lakes Education Cooperative. West Franklin Middle/High School is located in Pomona, KS. We are about 45 minutes southeast of Topeka, 45 minutes minutes southwest of Lawrence and less than an hour from the Kansas City metro area. USD 287 patrons recently passed a bond issue which provided building improvements throughout the district. The Middle/High School saw the construction of a new music room, weight room, ag shop, wood shop, gymnasium, and track. West Franklin Middle/High School employ 37 certified faculty, 2 counselors, and 2 administrators. The 340 students on our campus have the opportunity to take part in 8 Career and Technical Education pathways, numerous clubs and activities including 9 different sports. West Franklin High School is in the 2A classification for football and 3A for all other sports. West Franklin Middle/High School is a member of the Flint Hills League consisting of Central Heights, Chase County, Council Grove, Lyndon, Mission Valley, Northern Heights, Osage City, and West Franklin. West Franklin Unified School District 287 is comprised of two elementary schools, a middle school and a high school.
The two elementary schools serve Pre-K through grade 5; Appanoose Elementary is located in a rural location 7 miles north of Pomona, while Williamsburg Elementary is located within Williamsburg city limits. West Franklin Middle School, serving grades 6-8 and West Franklin High School, which houses grades 9-12 are on the same campus and both are situated in the town of Pomona. West Franklin Learning Center serves students in grades 6-12 who function better in a non-traditional setting and is located on the campus of Williamsburg Elementary.
The primary goal of the West Franklin School District is to successfully educate all students to the highest level in a safe and respectful environment. Technology is a high priority and is integrated into all subjects. A strong emphasis is placed on reading and math skills in grades Pre-K through 5. Middle School offers strong academic core courses with a wide variety of exploratory experiences as well as opportunities to participate in a variety of inter-scholastic sports and extra-curricular activities. West Franklin High School offers 90 different courses as well as 28 extra-curricular activities, including 14 non-athletic organizations. WFHS partners with Neosho County Community College to provide dual courses awarded toward both high school and college transcripts.
