The Kansas City- Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22-000 students- and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy- the #6 highest-rated High School in the Nation and the #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

 

With Head Start/preschools- 28 elementary schools- 7 middle schools- and 5 college and career academies/high schools- we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas- and our student population is approximately 51% Hispanic- 27% African American- 11% White- and 7% Asian. To serve our students- the district employs approximately 4-000 employees- including more than 1-600 teachers. 

 

JOB GOAL: To support the school district`s college and career readiness culture by ensuring all Diploma+ staff work in concert to implement all department goals and initiatives associated with Diploma+ successfully. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

  • Ensures students are on track to fulfill the goal of being college and career ready
  • Works with several internal and external entities to ensure students complete FAFSA and other college-funding forms as well as scholarship opportunities 
  • Ensures all 12th-grade students have applied to and planned for post-secondary learning 
  • Serves as the liaison for community-based organizations- Postsecondary Institutions- and the Armed Forces 
  • Coordinates college visits and college fairs
  • Assist students in the college application process- including transcripts- letters of recommendation- and essays  
  • Promotes and assists with ACT
  • Guides students as they make college and career decisions
  •  Performs data collection for college process:
    • Naviance Completion
    • Number of college applications
    • Scholarship money awarded to students
    • Percent of students completing the FAFSA or scholarship forms
  • Collaborate with local College Access Programs:
    • KU Trio Programs
    • Upward Bound 
    • Talent Search
    • Gear Up
    • Wichita State Trio Programs
  • Participates in professional growth and development activities- including staff meetings and in-service and staff development activities as required or assigned
  •  Assists in the documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
  • Ensures that the College and Career Center is a warm and welcoming environment for parents- students- and partners.
  • Keep an attendance log for all visitors in the college center- including parents- students- and all visitors.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Teaching Certificate Preferred but not required
  • Experience with the National College and Career Readiness Standards
  • Good knowledge of the college and career readiness curriculum used by Diploma+.
  • Good knowledge of the school’s program of studies related to mission- goals- and organization. Continually study and learn current research and theory.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students- parents- and peers.
  •  Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  • Excellent human relations skills.
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in the fast-paced- high-intensive work environment. Possess the patience- caring and desire needed to work with the students and parents to see that each student has the opportunity to succeed.
  • Know and follow Section 504 and IDEA amendments. 
  • Be courteous and professional at all times.
  • Maintain a neat and appropriate appearance.

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION: Maintains communication with school personnel and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action- which will meet the educational needs of students. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. Performs other related work as required. 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with various concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written- oral- diagram- or schedule form. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read- analyze- and interpret general professional journals- technical procedures- or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports- general curriculum and learning theories- correspondence- and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators- staff- parents- students- and the general public.

While performing the duties of this job- the employee is regularly required to sit- walk- stand and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. In addition- the employee must occasionally push items of 50 pounds- such as pushing on a bike or wheelchair or moving/rearranging furniture. While performing the job duties- the employee occasionally may visit a child’s home. This job`s specific vision abilities include close vision- distance vision- and depth perception.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students- peers- parents- and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication. 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 226 days 

SALARY:  $50-594.39 - $60-464.98

FLSA STATUS:  Exempt  

REPORT TO:  Diploma+ Director and Building Principal

EVALUATION: This position`s performance will be evaluated per Board of Education policy.
