Title:  Elementary Assistant Principal

Location:  Shawnee Heights Elementary School

Reports to:  Principal

Purpose and Objectives of the Position: The assistant principal is responsible for providing leadership, assistance, and support directed by the principal in the administration of the total school program. The assistant principal is responsible for the safety and welfare of students and staff and provides direct support to the principal in meeting the mission and needs of the school. The assistant principal is a member of the school-based mental health team and will provide leadership
and guidance to best ensure student success.


Essential Job Functions: 

  1. Builds positive relationships with all stakeholders.
  2. Ensures that the school is in compliance with state and federal mandates.
  3. Seeks; listens with compassion, understanding and empathy; and responds appropriately to suggestions, concerns, or inquiries.
  4. Assists the principal in managing the school.
  5. Effectively communicates the vision and mission of the school to staff, parents, students, and community members.
  6. Engages in programming, problem solving, and communications with students and staff in the areas of social emotional learning, skills for success, positive behavior supports, and mental health awareness and intervention.
  7. Promotes school wide commitment to help remove barriers that impact mental and emotional well-being, undermine school life, and obstruct academic achievement.
  8. Provides scaffold supports and professional development to build team capacities to effectively problem solve services for students presenting unique and/or significant challenges.
  9. Regularly monitors the school culture and progress through accrediting processes.
  10. Supports a clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing school environment.
  11. Develops and ensures the use of student and staff handbooks.
  12. Possesses conflict, mediation, and consensus building skills.
  13. Generates enthusiasm and strives to persuade others to work together to accomplish common goals.
  14. Demonstrates current knowledge of content, instructional practices, and assessment.
  15. Incorporates the use of appropriate technology within all areas of job responsibilities.
  16. Supports the successful implementation of SIT process.
  17. Assists in monitoring compliance of 504 plans and IEPs.
  18. Designs, implements, evaluates, and refines curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular programs.
  19. Promotes professional development that focuses on the whole child; academic, social, emotional, and behavioral.
  20. Supports an inclusive school environment that promotes academic achievement and skills for success for all students.
  21. Supports principal in doing classroom observations and staff evaluations.
  22. Creates a culture of high expectations for self, students, and staff.
  23. Makes effective use of available resources.
  24. Monitors the school improvement plan.
  25. Maintains discipline throughout the student body.
  26. Assists the principal in establishing and maintaining an effective learning climate in the school
  27. Supervises the reporting and monitoring of student attendance and works with the attendance supervisor for investigative follow-up action.
  28. Assists the principal in coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services.
  29. Supervises extracurricular activity programs.
  30. Assists with conducting safety inspections and drills.
  31. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the school day and at events and activities beyond the school day.
  32. Supports the Districts educational mission for all students and implements all Board regulations and policies in a fair and equitable manner.
  33. Comfortable discussing situations with parents.
  34. Monitors progress of student achievement.
  35. Assists staff with interpreting achievement data.
  36. Performs other duties as assigned by the principal and in accordance with the provisions of the USD 450 Board of Education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. Five years experience in teaching and/or administration
  2. A valid building leadership license issued by the Kansas State Board of Education.
  3. Knowledge of curriculum standards.
  4. Ability to analyze data.
  5. Ability to integrate technology with instruction.
  6. Ability to implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  7. Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance.
  8. Ability to keep student and personnel information and records confidential.

Terms of Employment:
Number of days and salary to be established by the Board of Education.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the USD 450
Board of Educations policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel and this job description.

Shawnee Heights U.S.D. 450 is a Class 5A suburban school district located between the two major population centers of Topeka and Lawrence, Kansas.
